  • I went over once when they were shooting off commercial grade fireworks on a Wednesday night and feel lucky to have escaped alive. The young bulls got threatening with me until the older guy came out and spoke reason. It's just a product of where I live.

  • I'm so old that the last time I wrote a research paper, it was on a word processor with no Internet connection or spell check.

Given such constraints, I can't fathom the concept of waiting until the end to add all the references. If I didn't do it as I went, I'd have surely died.

I should add that we always read each other's papers before submission to get a second set of eyes for errors, misspellings, and grammatical quagmires. It was mutually beneficial as the reviewing made us all better. Is that still a common practice?

  • Malk?

  • No good story ever began with a glass of milk.

Anthony Burgess: Hold my milk plus.

  • Here in the Texas summer it's about seven in the morning. Annoying, but everybody realizes that if you go out any later, you're gonna die of heat stroke.

  • My neighbors consistently party until about five in the morning with outdoor speakers on the weekends. I'm generally up for the day before they're done with last night, and I get to enjoy free concerts from their sound system.

You're God damned right I've zero qualms about firing up the lawn mower as soon as the sun breaks the eastern horizon.

  • I used power delete suite last year. Just checked and most of my profile is back. Assholes.

  • What about 3D printing one?

  • It's fine. Scotus will just say that the DOJ doesn't have authority to file lawsuits without express congressional legislation on each individual matter.

  • It's election time. Better slow the mail down to stop THOSE people from defrauding our democracy! /s

  • I don't think they're allowed to eat the cake anymore. They have to throw it all away at the end of the day instead.

  • I wonder if we were in one of the four districts that have banned it. I genuinely never saw that form or even heard a whisper about paddling.

  • There were always rumors of those things when I went to school in California in the seventies and eighties, especially how the principal would drill holes in it so he could swing faster, but I never saw one with my own eyes or knew any kids who had endured it.

I raised my daughter in Texas (long story that and I apologize though she didn't seem to mind). I don't recall any mention of paddles throughout her school years. I honestly have no idea if they get used anywhere in the state.

The only paddles I ever saw of that ilk at any age were decorative fraternity paddles many, many years after they'd ceased any and all actual use.

I'm curious how often this happens in these states.

Edit: Looked to Texas law on this, and parents have to opt OUT of it in writing each year. So you opt out in first grade, you have to do it again in second grade, etc. I never received such notice.

    Edit edit: Jesus Christ:

According to the Department of Education’s Civil Rights Data Collection, of the schools that used corporal punishment in the 2015-16 school year, 130 are in North Texas. The level of corporal punishment in those North Texas schools varied from 0.1% of the student body to 88.6%. All told, more than 2,100 North Texas students were paddled that year.

That’s the most recent data available. Only three of those 130 North Texas schools have explicitly banned the practice since 2016.

  • One juror refusing to convict is a hung jury and a mistrial, which prosecutors will then retry.

Jury nullification would require a unanimous vote to acquit.

  • I'm surprised by this because what rich guy wouldn't want to shift his income from a state with one of the highest if not the highest tax rate at his level of income to a state with no income tax?

It doesn't matter that the income will be sourced in Washington. He lives in California, and by that, the franchise tax board is hyper aggressive in getting their cut.

Note that the equity awards mentioned are taxable as well.

  • I didn't wake up this morning with the knowledge that I'm about to move to Pennsylvania and convert to being Amish.
