    Email was never intended to be private. It was never designed with privacy in mind and your use of a client employing an encrypted connection to your mail server does not solve the problem because tens of thousands of mail servers use unencrypted connections.

    No one needs your iCloud to read your email, they can just look at the plaintext mail coming to and from the server.

  • Go get involved and you’ll see pretty quick how people generally handle organizing. They’ll be some kind of low stakes event like a reading or art gallery or concert or something and people will say “come out to this protest tomorrow”.

    If there’s a signal or something it’s not usually a necessary link.

    All that is to say: don’t use computers to organize. If you want to use social media to raise awareness of an event that’s a different thing altogether.

    Honestly I think you’re right. A person making the choice about what to own free from any other constraints would be thinking like you. I think Chinas right to push people towards using lead acid on e-bikes in the face of lithium scarcity and trade restrictions too.

    It’s just two different situations that indicate different choices.

    Apropos of nothing, are you seeing usbc e-bike battery charging coming down the pike? I was seeing some rumblings a few years ago last time I built one.

  • So I don’t think you don’t have the experience to say the stuff you do, I just have wildly different conclusions from my own experience.

    I live in a place that’s 100% hills all the time. I am fat even after spending years cycling to get around. Sure everything below the waist is decent but the orthodontist gut ain’t going nowhere. Almost my entire adult life I’ve smoked cigarettes. I quit and it makes a difference but most of my saddle time is with a smoke hanging out of my mouth.

    I carried over fifty pounds of groceries, garbage, equipment, camping gear and anything else you can imagine all the time.

    Just about the only time I pushed the bike was when dimensional lumber was too wiggly to ride with.

    Now e-bike gearing is dogshit for pedaling and I think getting a drivetrain that can actually be operated by hand (or foot) is one of the factors people don’t consider near enough compared to top speed under throttle, but even then it just means you might have to get off and push sooner, not that the bike is unusable and most people around here realize what hills they need to hit at speed in order to make it after a few trips.

    I also think your bringing up wheel weight is misleading though probably not on purpose. The wheels inertia has to be overcome before it can be translated into going some direction, so the wheel literally exerts a mechanical advantage against the rider and therefore isn’t comparable to increased weight tied to the frame like a battery.

    I don’t think it’s an intentional error of comparison though because focusing on wheel weight is common to do. Its like the number two way to get better acceleration.

    It’s doubly tough to defend because batteries aren’t stored in the wheels!

    It’s triply tough to defend because at least one ebike wheel has a very high mass to begin with!

    The point I was trying to make oh so long ago was that if you have a population that does a lot of cycling, have a bunch of public transportation and need to balance between allocating scarce resources for high density batteries to bikes with a low weight and inbuilt backup drive system or electric vehicles with a high weight and no backup drive it makes perfect sense to push a less energy dense solution on the bikes.

    You say it’s better to have a light bike than to have fifty miles more range on an ev, but I think that’s incorrect. There are gonna be applications where the ev is the right choice and evs get more out of that energy density and bikes just don’t.

  • Okay but you’re not lifting the bike by its chainstay and swinging it around like a claymore or something, you lift at the center of mass, which in an e-bike is at the battery or damn close to it. It’s why they’re all in the triangle or under the rear rack and in the latter case manufacturers get away with it because you put the bike over your shoulder and use your hand on the bars to stabilize it thereby reducing the impact the battery weight makes on the bikes portageability through the use of the same lever whose fulcrum is your shoulder.

    A lot of what you’re saying seems to me to be dancing around the point of “I want an incredibly light, fast e-bike, not a 50lb grocery getter”, and I truly understand that desire. But the reality of the e-bike buying public is that people want those 50lb grocery getters.

    It’s the same as the car market. I want a manual everything, decently high displacement inline four with a manual transmission, manual 4wd, crawler gear and enough ground clearance that dirt roads aren’t an issue. Everyone else wants maximum fuel economy and lots of features so all the cars accommodate that set of desires instead of mine.

  • First things first: put real feet on your couch so you’re not doing more damage.

    The broader the better.

    Some people already talked about ironing and it can make a difference but you gotta get down to the wood surface with sandpaper, learn how to iron wood then successfully actually do it.

    Dents as big as these would require multiple passes with the iron over time.

    Your real best bet would be to call a handyman or more likely a flooring place and have them give you an estimate on repair. They’ll be able to tell you if you have some kind of tongue in groove, roll or actual hardwood floor and explain what your options are. You’ll also know how much you’re gonna be paying to get whatever the landlord is holding back from them.

    If you do call someone out there, find out what they charge for an estimate and pay them more on top of it in cash. People hate giving estimates because it’s someone shopping around who’s gonna try to get them down to the lowest price and has no consideration for their expertise and experience. Being willing to pay in cash and then some cements you as a customer, not a looky-loo.

    Businesses don’t respond to “minor” shoplifting because of an impact to their bottom line. Retail has an idea called “float” that’s meant to account for all the losses not covered elsewhere by spoilage, damage, actual confirmed theft, etc and its always an order of magnitude larger than the volume of loss from shoplifting.

    The response to shoplifting is primarily driven by insurance costs. It’s why the corner store down the street might hire some goon to stand around during peak hours and places that have to negotiate with insurance on millions of square footage spread over tens of thousands of locations tip the scales of local policy.

    If they don’t do something about the “shoplifting problem”(not a problem, not a serious impact to their bottom line), their insurance plan that covers all the stores for hundreds of millions in damages and costs as much in premiums is null and void.

    Okay but here’s why it won’t do what you’re asking about specifically: because not only does your shoplifting not impact the bottom line, the stores claiming there’s a shoplifting problem and then using their insurance premiums to justify draconian measures were already planning on implementing those draconian measures before they came up with the idea of shoplifting.

    Pushing security system upgrades across the board outfits all stores with high definition cameras and rack mount processing equipment that can do object, facial and gait recognition. It creates a stream of data that the store has complete ownership of and can use for whatever it wants. It’s the first step to reversing one area that big box retail has lost ground to online retail in: custom pricing.

    Custom pricing is arguably more powerful in the physical domain. Websites adopted it because getting people to buy shit they didn’t really want was already so hard that they said “shit, we got all this data, hey Jim, go infer what price this person will buy this stuff at!” And it worked.

    Physical retailers don’t have the convenience of letting you shop from your couch, but they do have a much higher conversion rate (that’s how often a sale gets made to someone who doesn’t want to buy) when controlled for other factors. The conversion rate thing is under contention in some circles and sales and marketing people get all their news and job training from magazines so expect funny headlines if you look this up.

    The point is that if you are online temporarily hovering over a marked down socket set you are only thinking about the price. If you’re stopped in target in front of a marked down socket set it’s cheap and immediate.

    It’s the same logic behind the candy at the grocery checkout.

    So if retailers can get the data that lets them fiddle with prices depending on who’s asking then they stand to make a tremendous amount of sales.

    All that is to say that no one cares if you shoplift and so you won’t actually make any difference by doing so.

    If you just wanna shoplift, do it. Your teenage girl ancestors are smiling down upon you as you palm that eye pencil.

    SMS.

    If the Internet outage is local then the towers would still work and you’d be able to get texts. I went through a few storms where wired home internet was down, the towers weren’t giving me a data connection (no mobile web browsing or anything), but I was able to send and receive texts.

    If you really care about what you’re asking after, do what someone else said and get a radio license. It’s 150 year old technology and every time something happens radio operators pop up some kind of emergency communications or bridge to the internet through repeaters or something.
