  • Huh? You just linked a community on lemmy.world. That’s a lemmy instance. The person above you is referring to piefed. You don’t understand the code.

Piefed has all the shit code that bans a bunch of stuff. They also delete your comment if it starts with a gif link. And then put your social score down one. They also block you from downvoting if your votes are negative (more downs than up). There so much dumb shit because there are against actual free speech.

    See this for proof: https://lemmy.ml/comment/23662293

  • Very true! It all funnels up. That helps me understand a little better. Thanks!

  • It’s not nice that I have downvotes for asking a question I want to understand how hurting local businesses helps? Maybe I’m thinking about it wrong?

For my local businesses that I go to, I know the owners. Technically that’s still good faith to make sure they’re not actually owned by a mega conglomerate that has 51% invested in them, but still.

  • The no shopping seems weird to me when I mostly go to local breweries or friend owned bars or small independent coffee shops where the owners and workers are leftists (all my usual third places). Supporting local helps my community. If this lasted longer and many people did this, then it would have a financial impact on these places. If they closed, some corpo owned bar/brewery/coffee could come in and just take their spot.

Can someone help me understand if protesting and hurting local is worth it?

  • Amazon Prime Video and Amazon the online store are two separate apps. This will have no impact unless it’s googled, and we push the book to the top. But simply searching “melania movie” will filter out the book.

We’re also way too small of a community (the fediverse at large even) to even push that kind of thing to impact any SEO.

  • I’m saying meeting deadlines promised that can’t be pushed back, like you have to present at a conference or something. Sure, you or your manager should’ve planned better. But at least in my job when we “have” to work nights or weekends we get time off otherwise. We also have oncall rotations that need to have intervention at night if a dependency breaks or something.

  • A few late nights here and there is perfectly fine! Heck, even my wife stayed a little late at the zoo sometimes to get stuff done. The main point of the post is glorifying overworking vs necessary overworking. It’s sometimes “necessary” in software to work a few late nights, but it should be FAR from the norm. Hell, my old manager used to let us order DoorDash on the company dime if we had to work a few hours on a weekend to meet a deadline. I got fancy sushi!

  • I’m on Kubuntu and loving it. The most I’ve had to go for a game on steam is change a compatibility tool (literally right click and click a checkbox and dropdown). Final Fantasy XIV (MMO) was mostly straightforward, but I had very specific mods and 3rd party tools I wanted, but they all work still after going down a mostly straightforward rabbit hole. Not a lot of weirdness there, just learning how to mod on Linux.

  • My girlfriend used to be on TikTok a lot. Her page was mostly trans news and gloom. It used to be a pretty far left platform like lemmy, but it’s corpo owned, so now we’re here.

  • I can! This is Seattle. The yellow sign only applies to the yellow curb. If the curb isn’t colored, or there isn’t a sign with an arrow, saying no parking beyond this, then the white and green sign applies.

  • Depends on the company. Apple uses a very specific type of chip for the wake word that cannot change the wake word. Alexa is able to change the sound wake word to almost anything, iirc.

  • I am on discord at least 4 nights a week. I need my push to mute button, which can’t be mapped globally in the browser. I do video chat a lot and share my screen occasionally. Vencord is ok for streaming (crashes after 30-60 minutes every time), but it acts like the browser, so there’s no global shortcuts.

I’ll test out the other clients and see how they work!

  • I also utilized AI in getting all my scripts and configs setup. It’s nice to be able to go back to the same chat and change a few new things or start new scripts with the same context window.

  • I’ve been on Kubuntu since November. Since I use my main PC as a media PC, it took some setup. I’ve had a few hard crashes, particularly when playing final fantasy XIV and using the native discord client, but it’s fine. Rebooting is fast, and I’ve got all my tools setup just fine with the game and I couldn’t be happier! I don’t feel held back by Linux like I did with windows. I can make my own quick tools. The biggest problem was getting a switcher script for my mouse profiles, but it’s just a simple startup script that runs a command on window focus changes.

I haven’t had to boot back into windows once yet!

  • The person above said “we all helped in some way” so that’s why I was replying to them. I know I’m in the margin of people actually trying to involve myself in local politics and fighting my way up.

It’s just exhausting and disheartening when the world looks down on me when I say I’m American because I’m born where I was, but I’m trying to make this place better and fighting all I can. I’m ashamed to be American as much as I can be, but I’m not leaving because I can still fight.

  • How the fuck did I help? I gathered signatures for the 2020 primaries in Mississippi. I moved from Mississippi to Washington to get out of the cesspool. I got involved in my local elections. I canvassed for my local progressive politicians. I went to protests to be a part of one of the largest American protests of my generation. It’s not my fault that I wasn’t born in Africa to an emerald mine family to be able to buy large media corporations and spew bullshit and buy elections. It’s not my fault that people are corrupt up top.

This is giving major “yet you participate in society” vibes.

  • By the way, it’s fixed now! \0/
