  • I should have clarified 3+ years after construction is completed.

  • There is also CAFE standards that made small, effecient vehicles require extremely high emissions standards while allowing looser standards for larger, less effecient vehicles. Effectively limiting foriegn market influence while increasing both the price and size of the average vehicle on American roads.

  • I've yet to see a study where additional lanes reduced congestion long term (3+ years), yet there have been many studies proving more lanes cause induced demand, which increases congestion

  • Bike lanes and transit is part of street building. The netherlands respect road hierarchy much more than north American standards do. America is also severely lacking rail infrastructure like intercity trains and cross country trains. Are you about to say that train building is part of road building too?

America cannot exclussively build roads to get out of their congestion nightmare, especially given the current standard for american roads which is basically every lane is built like a highway with the only difference being the speed limit number on the sign.

  • Some areas have mushrooms that are so similar the only reliable way to identify them is using a spore print.

Plants and animals tend to have more distinct identifying features like leaf patterns, bark texture or hair color.

  • Pretty sure big oil and car companies have been bailed out by the US government in the past. Plus america designs most of its cities so that you need to own a car. Seems like both markets are equally "free" at the end of the day.

  • But then ontario can drag its feet and delay rebuilding them for years all while pretending it solved traffic when congestion is predicted to get worse without the lanes.

  • Obviously it only makes sense to help Canada if it becomes a state. Half the reason they help with american fires is because they want to be a state so bad. /s

  • The netherlands did a lot more than just build roads. They built bike lanes, transit, walkability and made it legal for density to exist in their city, all things that north american cities resist as if it were the plague.

  • Says the country that believes in clean coal

  • It can be both, but at least if i don't catch any fish I'll catch a good buzz

  • Are there any first world countries that retest drivers regularly? I still think drivers should pay for their retesting. It doesn't seem fair to put that on the taxpayer.

The bigger thing increasing premiums and health care costs is the dangerous road designs in north america rather than the age of drivers. It also increases municipal spending to maintain borderline highways running through the city.

  • They do actually make 4x4 and AWD vans. I've serviced some rural northern ontario cottages in a pretty big FWD van and with enough throttle and the occasional tug you can go pretty far.

  • Vans are the superior choice for trades for the vast majority of trades. Keeps your tools clean and dry, thieves can't see everything in the back, the floor is often lower than a truck bed making loading easier, they are usually better on gas than trucks of the same size.

  • Those seniors could probably afford grocery delivery and rideshare services if they weren't paying insurance, gas, etc for their cars.

  • Its horrendously expensive. Unless we make the drivers pay for it but then they will write to their politicians about how unconstitutional retesting them is.

  • The cameras aren't a video feed. They take a snapshot if it detects you are speeding. Don't speed and your photo will never be taken. The municipality also public releases the location of the cameras and put signage up. You could alter your route accordingly if you wanted to avoid the cameras.
