  • For Search, it is about finding the least bad option and hope that they will become more independent. Mojeek (fully independent but poor quality) or Qwant (building own index, but dependent on Bing)

  • In the PrivateSearch section, but greyed out as they are not an EU based company.

  • Yup! It is noted in the highlighted text in red. I've had several people respond that they didn't know about it, and would be making the switch away :)

  • There are a lot of privacy-focused alternatives, but not all of them are. Fastmail and Infomatrix are two excellent options that are more focused on convenience

  • Sorry, that is a bit confusing. The other guides have companies with that indicator. Should have removed it here though.

  • There are so many good choices that it is hard to showcase them all - Mailfence often gets recommended

  • A company is not a person. Choosing not to support a company because it ultimately benefits its home country, which is actively waging war, should be considered a negative. Whether it is enough not to use their services is up to each individual. As you said, it is a FOSS application, so if you aren't using one of their paid plans, how much is it truly benefiting them?

Also, I don't think this is a "insert current enemy of the West" scenario. Ukraine isn't traditionally considered part of the West, and it has support from most countries and people worldwide (not just the West).

  • It is decentralised, so it is considered a global company.

  • Xigxag is mentioned, but you're right that I forgot to include BookBeat. The others are US based apps but support your local library/bookstore

  • Thanks for this. I spend so much time on the content from guide to guide that I forget how someone reading it for the first time might interpret it.

Will update the guide and post it to !PurchaseWithPurpose@lemmy.world

  • Thanks for the suggestion! Will add it to the next version of the guide.

  • Profit Share is good! It means they are sharing in the revenue. In this case, it is with your local libraries or bookstore!

  • Another shoutout to the "Library Extension". It will help you find alternatives should Storytel not have the option you want.

  • If someone wants to transcribe these guides, then I am more than happy to include them!

  • This is the first version of this guide, so please share any feedback, and I'll include it in the next version!

Note: I include the services that directly support local libraries and/or are non-profit organizations
