Basically a deer with a human face. Despite probably being some sort of magical nature spirit, his interests are primarily in technology and politics and science fiction.

Spent many years on Reddit before joining the Threadiverse as well.

  • Impossible to tell under current circumstances.

  • Lots of folk over in the Canada-specific communities were raging about how Carney was "selling out" or "folding" to America because he issued a diplomatically-worded statement about the Maduro kidnapping.

This is what grown up adult politicians do. They say "nice doggie" while reaching for a big rock.

  • I mugged Syukuro Manabe the other day and found the a Nobel Prize for physics in his wallet. I'm super smart now.

  • How does this timeline just keep on getting stupider and stupider like this?

  • Even the Russians are probably not so sure about Trump any more.

  • This guy is like a cartoon villain.

  • And that's when ICE will go "see? We need to be more heavily armed."

  • Sheesh, there's a Trump-level of understanding of diplomacy around here.

Carney's response was not "cowering". It was a carefully-worded rebuke to Trump's lawlessness written with the understanding that there was nothing good to come of openly antagonizing him. It's the sort of thing that a grown up adult person who is responsible for the wellbeing of millions would write. I know politicians like that haven't been making headlines much so we're all used to the sort of schoolyard bully bloviation that comes out of the Trump administration, but there are politicians out there that aren't dementia-riddled narcissists so don't assume it all needs to be like that.

  • Are you claiming you can't simultaneously believe the two mutually-contradictory things that the Government has told you to believe?

Perhaps a visit to Room 101 will help you understand better.

  • The article this thread is about, that you are directly responding to, is a sign of it.

  • Yeah. As usual, the bulk of the people realized too late that something needed to be done and only started doing it after it needed to be done, but at least it is being done. This is a pattern throughout history.

  • And one of the few high-ranked Americans to call this out just got his military pension stripped for being "seditious."

So apparently following the law is sedition in the United States now. Right.

  • And we're allowed to point out how terrible they are for decision-making, or how unrepresentative of underlying statistical results they are.

  • And now I expect we'll see another League of Nations fiasco soon, Trump has already denied visas to world leaders that he doesn't like so that they theoretically can't come to the UN. The treaty the US signed regarding the UN means they don't need visas for that, but we all know how Trump loves to follow agreements.

Maybe the UN can survive in some form by relocating, IIRC they do have a secondary office in Geneva already.

  • And unfortunately due to the prevalence of American media it "leaks" into other cultures as well. I'm Canadian and it's not uncommon to hear about people being arrested or whatever and claiming that their "first amendment" rights were being violated, or "taking the fifth" (ie, the fifth amendment's right to remain silent). We actually do have somewhat analogous laws for those things but of course they only know about the American ones and often get the details wrong as a result.

  • Ah yes. I was still awake after midnight on the 2nd when I saw the news, so it went down on that date in my mind.

  • It's a not uncommon pattern to have "successor states" that inherit the treaties and obligations of the previous ones. For example how Russia "inherited" the Soviet Union's position on the UN Security Council, or how Canada is bound by treaties with the First Nations that were signed by Britain (who we were a colony of at the time).

Would have been a Big Funny if Britain had handed Hong Kong off to Taiwan instead, though.

  • Yes, we see it, you can stop demonstrating the annoying behaviour now.

  • They did the shooting in Venezuela that day.
