  • If you're using this laptop to do work, then Mint or Zorin can't be beat. They have user-friendly interfaces, they have stable packages meaning updates are unlikely to break your OS, and you can still install new software through Flatpak and Snap.

Once installed, install Librewolf for web browsing, VLC for video playback, OnlyOffice for MS Office files, and any other software you need from the built-in software store. If you choose Mint then you need to turn on unverified Flatpaks in the software store for everything to appear.

Also, with the original 1 x 4 GB of RAM and mechanical hard drive, this laptop will be slow with a modern OS, so I recommend upgrading it to 8 GB RAM (2 x 4 GB is recommended for dual channel speed) and an SSD beforehand.

  • Use a VPN with a circumvention protocol like Stunnel. Windscribe has a 'stealth' mode using it.

  • If you have to go back for the user base, use a fresh Firefox profile with no extensions except uBlock Origin and Jshelter then combine that with a mobile hotspot without a VPN.

Also, when you create an account, do not use the sign up button in the top right. Instead click a random Reddit thread on Google, then click reply on a random comment and then create the account.

DO NOT use your main email (including Gmail's +1 or exam.ple variants) or phone number.

  • My 2.0 signal advice is for those using the built-in TV speakers or a soundbar who wonder why dialouge is so quiet.

Also, most TV's don't have an arbitrary slider for gamma. 2.2 is a target that many of the same model of TV should be within about 0.5 of when selected.

That advice is for those using LCD TVs with a 300 nit max brightness, not a 1000 nit OLED where BT.1886 may be more appropriate.

  • Set the gamma to 2.2 and make sure the eco mode is turned off.

You should also select the 2.0 audio track when available, or try the dynamic compression/volume normalisation setting.

  • It's pretty new

Almost all TVs come with a power saving or eco mode enabled by default which ruins visibility. Find that in the settings and turn it off. You should also turn off motion interpolation (e.g Trumotion, Clear Motion Plus, Motionflow) so motion doesn't become a smeary and artificial mess.

  • You can usually fix it by turning off power saving/eco mode and setting the gamma to 2.2 on your TV. You should also turn off motion smoothing (Trumotion/Auto Motion Plus/Motionflow/Clear Motion) so motion doesn't look overly smooth and fake.

  • Maybe try the Apple one when Android 16 comes out (in GrapheneOS form) which fixes the volume issues.

  • Which brand of adpater did you get? If you got a generic one then a bad DAC and durability aren't surprises.

  • That's why you don't just buy the cheapest one you see on Amazon. Google/DDG around to know which ones are good.

  • Re-read the article. All this feature does is give you the ability to say 'set a timer for 10 minutes' or 'start a phone call to John'.

If you have 'Gemini apps activity' off then they won't use anything you say to train their models.

  • Because a weak CPU, weak water resistance, and weak glass don't make for a long-lasting, sustainable phone.

I like the fact that the parts are easy to replace, but the big manufacturers beat them in other aspects of longevity.

  • You can get good Bluetooth earbuds for under $50 and a USB-C to AUX dongle for under $15.

The average person is fine with Bluetooth earbuds or an adapter, and audiophiles would not find the inbuilt DAC/amp on a phone to be adequate.

  • It's 6.3" because of the lack of top/bottom bezels. The phone itself is not much bigger than a Galaxy S7.

  • I love the idea but the price is too high for the chip given that this is designed to be a longevity phone. A chip like the 7s Gen 3 would make the phone sluggish after a couple of years with how unoptimised todays apps are.

The Gorilla Glass 7i and IP55 water resistance are also concerning given that budget Samsung, Xiaomi, etc phones beat this.

However having components of the phone being easily replacable is a great thing.

  • You can turn it off by going to Settings > apps > default apps > digital assistant > Google > none.

You should disable the Google app entirely while you're at it.

  • Gemini can be disabled. Uninstall/disable the Gemini app if your phone has it then go to Settings > Apps > Default apps > digital assistant > Google > none.

  • You can buy any TV. Just turn off the tracking in the settings and plug in a streaming stick.
