    That's the one thing I don't agree with. No one is locked into streaming services. Charging the prices people are willing to pay is not enshittification. Encshittfication will be when they buy all the cable TV, shut it down, start producing only reality shows and show ads every 5 minutes. So far they charge more but Netflix is still making Oscar winning movies.

  • It's not even that it's not feasible. The entire idea is stupid. VR makes a lot of sense in entertainment and AR will one day be really great for small things like showing map directions and notifications but the concept of a virtual computer controlled by waving your hands around is just silly. It will never make sense.

  • 85% after 2.5 years is not good. My car battery has guarante of 80% capacity after 6 years. 20% of range is a significant difference so I take car of my battery and don't charge it above 80% if not needed. It's the same with laptops. Current models can easily last 5-10 years but having only 50% of capacity after that time would be a problem. Sure, if you're intending to throw it out after 3 years it doesn't really matter but if you want to use it for as long as possible you definitely should take care of the battery. It's pretty much the only part that degrades (except maybe keyboard).

  • I think Blackberry had the right solution with their Hub app. It was just a big inbox with a lot of integrations. It would show you all the conversations from different apps (including email) with all the typical filtering, sorting and searching. You had a single screen to see all your conversations nicely organized but clicking on a message would take you to the external app to send messages. It was super useful but of course apps had to provide some API for this to work and BB wasn't popular enough so at some point it just stopped working. Android could easily do this but I think they are just not as good at UX as BB was (seriously, BB OS10 had lots of great features iOS copied a decade later and more, it was really nice).

  • WTF? Have you never met a kid in your life? Kids are stupid, their brains are still developing. You can't just reason with them, explain that the thing they want is stupid and that they should actually want something else. It gets worse with teenagers, they think they are actually smart and stop listening while thinking that every choice they make will have a huge impact on their entire life. Telling them to "suck it up and find some other friends" has to be the most pointless thing you can do.

    Look, I hate kids, don't have any and never will but even I understand how fucked up it has to be for your kid to be excluded from activities because they don't have a phone or have the wrong one. Being a parent now has to really suck. All kids bond over things that are bad for them (social media) so you pretty much have to choose how do you prefer to hurt your kid: by giving them a phone or by making them an outcast.

  • Sure it is. Platforms could for example close online sign ups and make people go to a physical location to open an account. Just like with banks. This of course will not pass but the issue is not that you can't enforce age limit. Banks do it. Online banks also do it. The issue is that enforcing this would kill the platforms.

  • Exactly. She also doesn't have to worry that the guy she's dating saw it and will dump her or that her co-workers saw it and are spreading rumours at work. She has to worry about her multimillion dollar brand which is something other women don't really have issues with. It's terrible for her but to claim that she somehow represents other woman in this is ridiculous.

  • For anyone interested what happened (according to some anonymous whistle-blower):

    They had to remove the door plug to replace damaged pressure seal but didn't want to run QA on the plug after installing it back so they didn't mark it as 'removed' in the tracking system, they simply treated it as door that were "opened". Parts were missed when inserting the plug, QA didn't check because it wasn't in the system, plane was delivered to the client. The rest is history.

    There' s a lot of backstory to it but that's the direct cause. Supposedly.

  • I live in Spain and I remember seeing a story in the local newspaper about a guy complaining that he was released from prison before he could finish some professional course he was doing (he got ~2 year sentence). He said that outside of prison he can't afford this type of education he was getting there for free. Just imagine, prison was actually offering him a way to a better job and life later. And that's not even the famous Norway, just normal Spain. This is how it should work. Locking up people just so they suffer for a bit is sick and pointless.

  • There's a great show on Netflix called '60 days in'. It's silly and exploitative on the surface but read between the lines and you will learn a lot about the justice system in US. It's basically designed to dehumanize and torture people with no presumption of innocence or any safeguards. The only goal is to punish as many people as possible. That's what the society expects from it and people that run it are happy to deliver.

  • But all those articles about Boeing issues will get more people to drive. It's ironic how fighting for higher flying safety standards can kill people. The surplus in car crash fatalities in the months after 9/11 was higher than the number of passengers on all the planes involved.
