Yeah! I use GrapheneOS and am very happy with it (and yes, $300 for a phone for it was very steep for me, even if I don't mind it now as a longterm investment). However, I really don't like the absolutism that a lot of its community promotes. I think I would run Lineage myself eventually, since GOS' updates end much earlier.
Especially given that some of the common budget devices, like Huawei, lacks Google services. It is the reason why all the major banks here except one don't require Google services.
I have seen a bit of that, but every time it turned out to have an option without. For example, one chain wanted you to use an app for making orders - but when you say "I am sorry, I have a dumbphone", it turns out there is a tablet for this on the reception.
I use a loyalty card pretty often. It's just that it is almost always another customer's card) And in case this is not available - a barcode of some rando's loyalty card I found online, the valid ones are often easy to find.
Most of my library is scans of paper books. I wish more of my reading was in native epub and not automatically recognized with tons of mistakes, but eh, whatever.
I am IP-blocked by a lot of things. At some point a large percentage of population just gets used to the fact that VPNs/proxies are now just a mandatory part of the internet usage.
The overwhelming majority of my library is actually not digital-native - rather, pdf or djvu scans. I should really contribute to Libgen by scanning some of my library.
I got Conduit working relatively easily. However, it had constant issues with encryption in groups. I never even considered Synapse because it's too heavy for my minimal, cheap VPS.
Self-hosted XMPP is much easier tho, and it "just works".
Bur what about servers that are not based in the UK? They are not officiallly doing business there, they just happen to be accessible from there. And with Fediverse, you can specifically choose a server that suits your jurisdiction needs.
