A geologist and archaeologist by training, a nerd by inclination - books, films, fossils, comics, rocks, games, folklore, and, generally, the rum and uncanny... Let's have it!

Elsewhere:

  • Yrtree.me - it's still early days for me in the Fediverse, so bear with me

  • Oops "sanctioned country" sorry.

  • I would add to this list - learn how to build a fire (ferro rod, flint and steel, fire bow for bonus points), tie knots, basic bushcrafty stuff.

Learn first aid and how to cook - you may need to be able to light a fire in the future but making food and fixing basic injuries will always be useful.

  • A joint investigation by the U.K. publications The Observer and The Citizens, published in 2023, revealed that Right to Life U.K. increased its Facebook advertising budget more than ten times from 2020 to 2023.

And this is why we need as many people as possible off the Big Web as it is a primary way for these groups (and others with various reactionary agendas) to radicalise people.

  • Please don't.

  • Winning!

  • That was a surprise to me.

  • It is always difficult to see great British companies on the list:

    • Walkers
    • Cadbury's - I went to Uni in Brim and lived on land donated by the family (no bar allowed because they were Quackers), then by the chocolate factory (smelled sooo good) and used Bournville train station (painted in the company colours), so feel some connection to their history

Luckily, I've cut sugar and crisps out of my diet, so I was already boycotting them. Kind of.

  • Yeah, at the moment, out of FAANG, Google doesn't seem so bad any more (the US government is even trying to break it up BT getting them to split Chrome off), but then you realise that it is only relative and there's a reason degoogling is important (but also one of the hardest things to do). The huge amount of resources required for video hosting and the monetisation they offer make YouTube one of the trickiest services to replace too.

  • Earlier I shared this with a friend as it pretty much underlined how weird things have got:

The US Department of Education intends to lay off nearly half of its workforce. The layoffs of 1,300 people were announced by the department on Tuesday and described by the education secretary, Linda McMahon, as a “significant step toward restoring the greatness of the United States education system”.

    ...

Trump campaigned on a promise to close the department, claiming it had been overtaken by “radicals, zealots and Marxists”. At McMahon’s confirmation hearing, she acknowledged that only Congress has the power to abolish the agency but said it might be due for cuts and a reorganization.

I suspect most of us would rather take an unprotected chair shot to the head than whatever this nonsense is.

I presume Vince's pardon is already drawn up awaiting a signature.

  • I just wanted something that works out of the box and not take on a new hobby…

That's it, I have plenty of things to tinker with but, on my laptops and desktops, I really don't want to have to do much messing about. I just need to install and go. I'm currently on Ubuntu but it'd be rude of me not to try Mint, especially now I know it is from Ireland.

    • Linda McMahon of WWE: $16 million
    • Bigelow Aerospace: $14.1 million
    • Laura & Issac Perlmutter Foundation: 12.4 million

Wild to see them high up the list - who knew Skinwalker Ranch was generating that amount of money? OK, it isn't, but still...

  • That's seriously impressive. If everyone did this the future would definitely look a bit brighter.

The latest 14MtCO2e (3.6%) reduction takes UK emissions down to 371MtCO2e, according to Carbon Brief’s new analysis.

This is the lowest since 1872 and on par with 1926, when there was a general strike, as shown in the figure below. In 1872, Queen Victoria was on the throne and Wanderers beat Royal Engineers in the first-ever FA Cup final, held at Kennington Oval in south London.

It's great progress and looks like we'll keep dropping hard for quite a while. Getting down to pre-Industrial Revolution levels will be key.

  • Big fan of Gary's Economics - he and Varoufakis got me thinking more about Neofeudalism.

And if anyone reading this hasn't done so, it is worth subscribing to Gary's Economics at least until we can get those channels off YouTube.

  • I am desperately looking for non-American takes on economy, technology and social issues.

I suppose the modern go-to is Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty.

  • Technofeudalism, by Y Varoufakis. Greek economist and former minister of finance of Greece.

His website draws together his articles and it is worth grabbing the RSS feed.

  • Yes indeed, the Streisand Effect at work.

  • Maybe I understand something incorrectly, but I’d like to avoid those hosting providers.

It's probably misleading as Cloudflare sits between a site and the Internet which allows it to speed up page delivery and, probably why it's being used here, it can help mitigate attacks on the site.

If I had to guess, the hosting of Lemmy instances probably breaks down like:

    • Hetzner - Germany and Finland
    • OVHcloud - France

Providers like Oracle are in there because they provide a free tier of hosting that is handy for a small instance, if you are going by numbers of users served, then Hetzner will be on top. This is at least partly down to it being difficult to find a cheaper good-quality service, which is critical if you are relying on donations.

Also I don’t get this frontend, backend thing, but apparently there’s difference when it comes to interpreting hosting providers.

Lemmy's frontend is separate from its backend, which means you can add new frontends if you want, like old.feddit.uk. I might be missing something but I don't think this will have much bearing on picking a hosting provider.
