A geologist and archaeologist by training, a nerd by inclination - books, films, fossils, comics, rocks, games, folklore, and, generally, the rum and uncanny... Let's have it!

Elsewhere:

  • Yrtree.me - it's still early days for me in the Fediverse, so bear with me

  • !growthefediverse@slrpnk.net is a new community to organize growth on the fediverse

    Jump
  • Fedxodus, movement of jah people.

  • Somehow, porn returned.

  • Careful, I think you are choking on something.

  • Well I'm an idiot too then as I'm already subbed to that community.

However, yes, that's a perfect companion to the Web Revival community.

  • !digitalgardens@lemmy.blahaj.zone seems kind of relevant. I do not mod it for transparency.

Thanks but I can't find it either through the link or over on LBZ.

As much as I like seeing bad ginormous corporate sites burn I am very glad you are not having that in the community, I nigh-on guarantee the negativity that would generate and the outrage would outshout any constructive post about building something. Destruction and watching the world burn is easier than building something nice in its place.

Exactly, it would change the tone of the community for the worst.

  • And while you are at it... put your left leg in.

  • Something related to simple/basic HTML and CSS code, like they used to be back then?

That's the banner sorted. I'll make some relevant HTML and screenshot it.

I try to avoid vindictive content myself but you may also consider showing the demise of that shi… corporate Web,

I'll avoid it as one of the manifestos mentions that we should be being kinder and look out for each other. So my aim is to not watch the Big Web burn (we have lots of communities for that) but all the positive things we can do to make the Web better.

BTW, I also promoted your new community to our members as I think they might really be interested in what you want to do ;)

Great thanks, there's a lot of crossover with other communities, as we Fediversers are part of this Web Revival.

I've added your community to the sidebar. If you know of others that might fit, let me know.

  • Thanks for that but, as we are a link aggregator and everything revolves around the link, it is better to have the main URL as the original article and add the archive to the body of the text. That way, if others post the same link, Lemmy detects it and provides a link over to the other community (which also helps us spot when the same link is posted twice to the same community).

  • No. The death penalty is no deterrent and we've seen on numerous occasions how flawed the justice system is, so we can rarely be 100% sure we have the right person (unlike in this case which is unequivocal). I also hope that they can undergo some kind of rehabilitation, perhaps not to the point that they realise the horrific nature of their crimes and have to spend their years with that knowledge eating away at them.

  • Stan Reiz KC, mitigating, told the court Rudakubana had appeared to have been a "normal child" until he reached 13.

Mr Reiz said: "There is no psychiatric evidence before the court that could suggest that a mental disorder contributed to the defendant's actions.

"However, he did make a transition from a normal, well-disciplined child to someone who was capable of committing acts of such shocking and senseless violence."

The description of what happened is horrifying and I'd just like to know what happened to him that turned him into someone capable of that.

  • Indeed. A lot of places that offer encrypted messaging are just built on things like XMPP without most people realising. WhatsApp is, I believe.

  • It has come up before, although the instance is gone and I suspect it only lives on in the Internet Archive. I generally stand by the points I make there - different instances could work for people into different things and federation would allow people to adjust their settings to fling out a wider net. So I might be on a regional instance but want to throw my net wider to include furries or uniform dating or sugar daddies or feet. However, you'd need quite a few people signed up to make an instance viable but that also might be where federation comes in, although that might not help if you are a lonely guy in Tokyo looking for a girl who likes cats and the only other person around is someone in Belgium who is looking for a guy who will dress up in an inflatable unicorn outfit.

I also thought that the approach in this study could be useful.

  • Depends where you are. It'll be dangerous around here - in previous storms there was a video of someone jogging along the promenade as the waves crashed. Looked fancy but the debris the next day included plenty of bricks and rocks, and an old car tyre, so they could easily have been brained.

  • I'm out and about in that mess tomorrow, so I'm going to need more than a stiff upper lip. Perhaps a pair of weighted trousers.

  • From the top level of this: An open letter to NLnet to pull funding from development of Loops

    Conflict of interest

This open letter has been authored by contributors who wish to remain anonymous. The authors, as well as some of the undersigned, are friends and acquaintances of hazycora, and as such, we acknowledge any potential conflicts of interest stemming from our relationship.

I don't know either party but from the information made public it looks like dansup has acted like a dick and fallen out with hazycora and the drama has escalated hard.

From what I've observed dansup has been going full tilt to get Loops done because of the issues with TikTok and he is not great at delegating or really dealing with people. However, it would be a shame for such vital projects to have their funding cut but, equally, if I was in charge of those grants I'd be worried about dansup burning out and progress stalling. So it should be a requirement that all this is made open source as a priority, with a short to medium term goal being to have these projects run by a group of people to ensure the future and avoid similar issues going forward.

  • A rare red weather warning covering Northern Ireland and Scotland was issued on Thursday before what could be the strongest storm in generations.

The Met Office said the arrival of Storm Éowyn on Friday could bring gusts of up to 100mph and “flying debris resulting in a danger to life”.

The red warnings, an upgrade of existing amber warnings, covered all of Northern Ireland and parts of central and southern Scotland, including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ayr and Peebles.

    ...

Northern Railways, which operates across northern England, advised passengers to “avoid travelling where possible” as it cancelled services before the storm. The company said it was expecting “severe disruption” and had cancelled services across the network including trains across the Pennines, down the Cumbrian coast and between Carlisle and Newcastle.

LNER said there would be no services north of Newcastle in either direction from 11am on Friday. Avanti West Coast advised passengers not to travel north of Preston or on its North Wales route.

Blimey, we're in for a rough one.

  • Are those still maintained?

I don't know. They could do with an update but are still decent enough guides for our purposes.

If you are interested in a project, it should be possible to create a page on the Join Fediverse wiki with a list of equivalents that would then be much easier to keep up to date. Probably link it in via "further reading" here:
