  • My first job was working under a Chilean cook who was the most joyless, bitter and angry person I had ever met. I used to end my shifts with music and one day, I was listening to some Carlos Puebla (the main musician of the Cuban revolution) and it caught his ear. He came up and asked "do you know who is Camilo" (because the song was named Canto a Camilo). I said yes of course. He then started opening up to me. He told me he was in a HARD LEFT revolutionary group when Pinochet started cracking down. He lost most of his friends and family, they were murdered or disappeared by the state. Before I thought of him as just a regular asshole but holy crap did his story put things in perspective. My cute little soft leftie ass couldn't even conceive of a true revolutionary like that.
