  • One could argue that the Steam Hardware Survey being opt-in means that it's likely to overestimate the power of Steam users' computers, since people with fancy rigs are far more likely to want to brag about it.

  • Side quests are the way to go, the main campaign is not super rewarding

    The worst part is that you're forced to spend at least 1/3 of your time playing grinding out the main campaign. Then you are highly incentivised to spend another 1/3 of your time in game not playing due to the rest mechanic. That only leaves 1/3 of your time in game for any other tasks, including extra preparation for the main quest. Not to mention the fatigue system which often leaves you unable to do side quests when you have the opportunity.

    I'm glad I didn't roll any of the classes with extra lives, to be honest.

  • Luigi's Mansion 3. At least if you consider 6 years ago recent. It got some really good reviews at the time, and it honestly makes me wonder if we were playing the same game. I loved the first one, by the way - I got an A rank while also getting golden frames on all the portraits (on the PAL version where you need more money).

    I only persisted with the game because it was a birthday gift (and due to the sunk cost fallacy, I suppose), but I think it might be the game I've completed that I enjoyed the least. It looks nice, and some of the boss ghost encounters were charming, but the gameplay itself was fairly monotonous since they simplified the ghost catching mechanics from LM1 (I didn't really play LM2, since it was on 3DS). Gooigi would have been a decent addition, but his puzzles generally just didn't feel very fleshed out. It felt like they were either "I need two vacuums" or "I can't fit through this grate".

    Also, I think Nintendo took the criticism that the first game was too short well and truly to heart, because LM3 might be the most filler-stuffed game I've ever played. Half the time when you get an elevator button, you get screwed over in some way and have to find it again. And don't get me started on fucking Poulterkitty, when that little bastard showed up for the second time I legitimately thought about quitting the game there and then. The final boss was awful, too, which left an even more bitter taste in my mouth.

    Luigi's Mansion 3 might be the only game I've ever played where I thought "Thank god I don't have to play that anymore" once I finished it.

  • Jewellery is actually spelled with the extra syllable outside of the US.

  • A kilobyte is 1024 bytes. Yes, I know "kilo" means 1000 - I don't care since it's obvious from context.

    Back in the day, using base-10 prefixes for base-2 stuff was considered fine. 1024 is close enough to 1000, after all. It only changed when some dickhead realised that, by insisting that a kilobyte (and the bigger units) was 1000 bytes, they could sell you less hard drive space without lowering the number on the box.

    If you don't believe me, look at your RAM. Nobody's ever sold RAM by the "gibibyte".

  • The worst part is, in Super Mario 3D Land, at least, if you even see the invincible leaf, it locks you out of getting all the stars on your save file. The game doesn't even have the courtesy to tell you.

  • It's really annoying when you're dying to instant death pits so changing the difficulty wouldn't help, though. I'm looking at you, God of War.

  • It's almost like sex is a natural part of human existence and it being taboo is the bit that really fucks people up.

  • Unless it's an HD one, there's no input buffer so it's impossible for a CRT to have more than a frame of input lag. And the console needs a frame to notice your input anyway.

  • There are only a few reasons I can surmise that this would be the case:

    CRTs don't add any input lag

    There's no extra latency from being connected to the internet

    There's no latency from bluetooth/wireless on the controller

    Because most older games are extremely badly optimised by today's standards. The original Metroid slows to an absolute crawl when there's more than about 4 sprites on the screen; the dragon boss in Mega Man (2, I think) was such a laggy, slippery mess that I gave up trying to beat the game; Ocarina of Time runs at 20FPS (worse if you're in a PAL territory like I am), and that's one of the better playing N64 games.

    I think you're either noticing one of these extra sources of delay, or you're blinded by nostalgia.

  • I mean, it's certainly better if they're dipped properly, but each individual LED is still far too bright.

    A scooter with a ring of single LEDs on it drove past me once - I guess they were some sort of cosmetic thing - and they were still dazzlingly bright in full daylight.
