I'd throw Spicetify into the ring for desktop. The dev team is always pretty quick to fix breakages and post info on their Discord. Between themes and plugins (including adblock) I can't recommend it enough.
And taking that a step further, I believe it was Blackberry that was proliferating the free text messages thing at the time (so long as it was to another Blackberry) so that could even have led to not enough market room for third-parties like WhatsApp and Kik to dominate the way they did.
I have the exact same history with that site and its... creativity when adding stuff to my household download history that I know for a fact no-one in my household would be downloading. Safe to say it's extremely unreliable.
