  • A large proportion of Lemmy are not pro-capitalist, yes.

  • I’d recommend posting a tangentially political meme at some point on Lemmy.

The amount of people who will come out of the woodwork to tell you ‘don’t post this’ and ‘don’t make things political’ will really be eye opening.

People don’t want to address systemic issues and think not talking about them is a viable solution.

  • Yeah. America isn’t the world.

Plenty of countries have functioning public transport.

America is not the exception, you can survive without cars.

  • My frustration comes from the fact that hybrids exist and are not used nearly as enough as they should (all cars should have been mandated as hybrids a decade ago) and this would reduce the downsides of electric car production.

I’m not defending ICEs here, I just think the overall environmental credentials of electric cars at this point in time isn’t as good as hybrids.

I fully expect this to change in the future but I’ve got entire fleets of vehicles which are less than 5 years old being replaced by electric and that makes no sense.

Also cars generally are just a terrible solution to mass transport. We already have the most environmentally friendly option known to man. Bicycles and trains.

Edit: for further information on hybrid vs electric see this analysis:

  • Yep.

I’m convinced it’s a system designed to take advantage of young impressionable people who don’t know any better while keeping ‘expertise’ and ‘knowledge’ behind a paywall.

Nothing uni has taught me could not have been learnt by myself reading papers and following YouTube.

Except for the fact learning through those means is not recognised as ‘legitimate’.

  • I think our definitions of politics are fundamentally different.

I would say politics is the struggle for power.

Power is an underlying factor across all of society so politics affects everything.

  • I never said I only have discussions with people I know.

I actively have political conversations in real life on actual policy issues with a broad range of people.

    Have you never campaigned before?

  • It’s not a place for nuanced debate because I have no idea who I’m talking to.

I’d rather devote my time to having those nuanced conversations in real life (which I do) than trying to convince an American online through a meme community that gun bans would reduce school shootings for example.

  • To be taken seriously offline I necessarily have to make well reasoned and researched arguments.

Lemmy is where I come to blow off steam and just berate my ideological opponents because they genuinely are losers.

It is not a place for nuanced debate.

  • Oh shit, I’m a ghost‽

  • Garrison’s gone so far right he’s starting to raise left talking points.

  • You sure showed me the error of my ways!

  • We’ll show you how much we can take a joke by down voting this comment!

(Yes, this comment will be downvoted too)

  • Least aggressive response.

  • Sometimes it’s a case of you can make fun of your own country but no one else is allowed to.

  • I’m glad Mkbhd is against/cautious of crypto.

  • Thank you, that other meme made me think of this. The world isn’t simple people. Nuance everywhere.

  • Some call it imperialism, the US calls it a good economic quarter.

  • Ahhh child abuse. What a great parenting technique.
