    Is Naruto overrated?

  • Recently there was also some critique of Bleach on here. I used to watch things like Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail, etc when I was young. I do really think you need to be quite young and naive and excited by dumb action in order to enjoy this type of anime (as I was back when I watched those). They are also very long, so for an adult with not that much time you would be much better off watching a bunch of shorter anime than to commit to such big one. In my experience all those types of long running shounen have bad writing, massive plot holes, terrible romance, dragging out the plot, power creep, etc. Those shows are definitely overrated in my opinion.

  • Nichijou, City, Lucky Star, Hidamari Sketch, Zetsubou sensei.

Nichijou and City have this very special thing where the foreground (mostly characters) and the background have this seamless harmony. Usually the characters are in a completely different art style and colour palette than the background.

Lucky Star's backgrounds are in that delicious water colour style. Hidamari and Zetsubou each have an iconic flat style that just has so much soul to it.

All my picks have an unrealistic style and most of them are very chibi. Much more can be said about their style but I'll keep it short, you'll just have to watch them :)

  • I always thought of Lemmy as more of an alternative to big tech, not really as a tool against state censorship. The features seem to be build accordingly. Of course it would be cool if such feature are added. Hopefully Veilid will become mature enough to build applications like Lemmy or Discord on top of it.

  • My nvidia drivers used to break sometimes but I just switched to dkms drivers and I have had a stable experience for years. Only downside is the upgrade takes a bit longer.

  • I really like this episode. Wako is always a treasure. Had a feeling the jokes of the shougi match went over my head. Of course the Mambo no. 5 section was funny. Mio drew really gay stuff again (one of the dudes from her manga is voiced by the seiyuu of Takasugi from Gintama?).

But my favorite part is the tennenkinenbutsu part. Which really made me think of Pani Poni Dash! when they also called the great salamander "tennenkinenbutsu". I also thought they were drawn in very funny and charming way. Gakusha is my favorite one, the salamander was also one of my favorites in pani poni.

  • I have replaced it and it just clipped in and out of a round little thing it sits in. I happened to have the right battery on hand.

  • I'll make sure to replace the CMOS and use disk encryption next time. My sensitive data is encrypted separately so I'll be fine for now. I thought that with a bios password someone couldn't just boot from a USB on my system but clearly it only delays such actions by a minute or two.

  • You're totally right, it only makes sense. Maybe my brain needs its battery replaced as well.

  • Thank you, that makes sense. I guess it was almost dead and now it is really dead. I don't understand how that makes Linux freak out over the login password though.

  • I don't know specifically about animation humor but some general language based things will not easily translate from English to Japanese.

    • As far as I can tell, Japanese people swear a lot less and their assortment of swearing is quite limited compared to English. I think creative swearing, which is quite common in media, is very hard to translate to Japanese.
    • Japanese poetry is very different and it doesn't really rhyme in the way we are used to. Translating something that rhymes into Japanese is probably a challenge.

I'm not fluent at all so don't take my word for it.

  • Ah they did my guilty pleasure: temporary tomboy feminization. When the tomboy gets dressed in girly things for a moment. It was really funny when Oni came to get his soba. I also like the parts with the old men they have a real good vibe together.

  • When he sings those songs it is quite language heavy and might not translate well to people who are not fluent in Japanese. Same thing with western fans calling Nichijou surreal at places where there is actually a joke but it is language based so it seems absurd.

  • I don't think it was explicit yet but Wako called Riko "imouto". They have different hair colours so that's kinda rare but makes sense that best girls are sisters. Also Riko can do hacking crashes the crazy vehicle. This is why you don't add internet capabilities to shit that doesn't need it (like a scooter or a fridge).

  • Many like Riko. Understandable. Tanabe has one-eyed daruma like Nano. And the text on the police officer's hat is definitely a reference the the dudes in green jackets from Nichijou, right?

  • A long time ago I watched shounen only, I didn't know any better. I randomly started watching Gintama and I realised that I liked the non-action parts a lot. It made me interested in things that weren't mostly action and was the first step of me getting into slice of life anime. And SOL made me more interested in daily life and existing. That sounds ridiculous but hey.

  • Probably Gintama, I don't know exactly at what point. I definitely remember watching Gintoki vs Takasugi and having to rewind because I couldn't see shit through my tears.

  • I started out with a TWM so I had to.
