  • I don't mean to support amazon in this, but the article outlines them promoting their own products over others? Unless the buy box implies something other than "we would like you to buy this", I dont really understand the issue with that particular point

  • I find storm light archive very difficult to pivot from. Mostly the prose used is gets so out of your face that you can focus on just consuming the story rather than the words.

    I also found cradle by Will Wight sticking with me seeing as I read all 12 books in a month so I became quite familiar with the world and the characters

  • Linux mint or zorin OS for layman beginners who just want everything to work and focuses on stability , privacy , security ? Also what to do if I switched to mint and WiFi stopped working ?

  • Something to keep in mind is that Linux doesn't have the same hand holding as windows. By all means make the switch but do not run sudo commands you don't understand unless you're comfortable debugging or reinstalling your system.

    I learned that the hard way, though I was more than happy to just reinstall and try again. If Linux gives you any warning, please pay attention instead of ignoring like you would on windows.

    I think mint is a great choice and I've installed it on my laptop recently and its been working very well. I'm no expert but hopefully if you have any questions I can help you out.

  • Linux mint Debian edition. I just wanted to properly try cinnamon since I know GNOME isn't for me and I really like KDE. Other options strike me personally as mostly just downgrades to KDE. It's been very easy, absolutely nothing to complain about.And the best part is I don't update 2000 packages every time I use it lol (it mostly sat in a drawer collecting dust).

    I don't know that there's really much difference use wise aside from the lack of updates. Everything largely looks and feels the same. Debian doesn't have YaST obviously, but I never actually used my laptop enough to appreciate it so idk what I'm missing out on there.

    No harm in trying stuff out, especially if you don't use your laptop much like I do.

    I also started with tumbleweed in December, but it didn't play nice with my desktop for some unknown reason so I switched to Fedora. Also didn't make much sense to run a rolling release on my laptop so I just moved to Debian on the laptop and it's been great.I hope you enjoy your experience. Plenty of very helpful people here and forums to find answers to questions you might have later down the road (or tomorrow if you're anything like me).

  • I made the switch at the start of the year out of curiosity. I had worked for QNX as a student and though that I should have had a better understanding of the system, so I started using WSL for all my programming.

    Then joined Lemmy in the summer and that increased my interest in trying it out full time. I was also getting increasingly disappointed with Windows pushing updates for Win11 and features like onedrive.

    I've been super happy with it so far. I've gotten way more familiar with my OS and it's been such a huge shift in perspective for me to be able to shape the way the OS works to my workflow rather than the inverse.

  • I originally had the actual package for my distro. The issue is that it updates and then only provides me with the options of downloading a tar.gz or a deb file. I suppose I could just do a remove/install to get the updates, but I was kinda hoping to avoid having to do that

  • Most games so far I haven't had to tinker with. I just switched a few months ago and it's been smooth sailing. That said, I can't speak to using any photo editing software.

    I'm keeping windows on my computer now for a piece of software for programming my non-custom keyboard and other miscellaneous windows only things like updating Xbox controller firmware. But it has been a blast and being able to make the PC work for me instead of the other way around has been an extremely positive experience.

  • I updated kernel just now and maybe that will fix it. If not, then I will try reading the logs. Any ideas as to what to look for? I looked briefly through journalctl and I wasn't really too sure what to keep an eye out for. I know red is bad, but everything in red that I looked for didn't seem related (mostly networking stuff)

  • I'm sure there was a way to disable it but whenever I would hit print screen a one drive ad would pop up on my laptop. It also kept bugging me to update to windows 11, where the options were "yes" and "ask me again in 3 days". I had no intentions of upgrading to win11.

    I also don't like many of the changes made in win11, while I haven't used it much I've touched it and it bothered me. Examples include the lack of vertical task bar, the weird context menu, the rounded edges, and the start menu. Plus my desktop PC doesn't even support win11 for some reason so this seemed like a good time to make the switch.
