  • The Justice Department is closing in on what would be the most consequential federal antitrust lawsuit challenging Apple, which is the most valuable tech company in the world. If the lawsuit is filed, American regulators will have sued four of the biggest tech companies for monopolistic business practices in less than five years.

Between this and what Lina Khan's been up to at the FTC it's actually been looking really hopeful for antitrust lately.

  • I'm one of the converts. Didn't like Windows 11 at all, decided to try Ubuntu/Zorin before going back to 10 and ended up staying. I've tried various distros many times over the past ~15 years but it never felt "ready" to me until now.

  • No problem! I really like it!

  • TrueNAS is very good at being a NAS. I used it for some time but eventually moved to CasaOS because it's better at being a home server.

  • And it didn't stop people from being shitty.

  • Sorry you're getting downvoted, you're correct. It's not implausible to assume that generative AI systems may have some kind of umwelt, but it is highly implausible to expect that it would be anything resembling that of a human (or animal). I think people are getting hung up on it because they're assuming a lack of understanding language implies a lack of any concious experience. Humans do lots of things without understanding how they might be understood by others.

To be clear, I don't think these systems have experience, but it's impossible to rule out until an actual robust theory of mind comes around.

  • Exactly thank you for pointing this out. It also assumes that the tester would have knowledge of the wider context in which the test exists. GPT could probably fool someone from the middle ages, but that person wouldn't know anything about what it is they are testing for exactly.

  • My gut says that this is probably not appeasement but a subtle rebellious act. They could have edited the article or geoblocked it just in India, but instead they removed it altogether, adding to the story and ultimatley bringing even more attention to it.

  • I assume, stuck between a rock and a hard place, they decided that compromising with censorship was not an option, while probably hoping that the headline "Reuters removes article" would have somewhat of a striesand effect. If that was the case it seems to have worked as we're here talking about it.

  • +1 for CasaOS! The simplest and best I've tried.

Lots of good suggestions here already but nobodys mentioned the Asrock A300 DeskMini. Low power consumption and you could probably find one for pretty cheap.

Obviously an old laptop you don't use anymore is a great and affordable choice too. Comes with a built-in battery backup!

  • I use it. It's great. I've tried Linux many times over the past decade but it never stuck until Zorin. If you're coming from Windows it's a very friendly (and polished) way of being welcomed to Linux while also showing off Linux's strengths, things that are often hidden to the user unless they want to explore the terminal.

For Mac users who are Linux-curious I would recommend Ubuntu because it's much similar, whereas Zorin seems clearly designed with people who liked Windows 10 but not Windows 11.

  • some websites don’t work on Firefox

Are you sure? Is there a list of these websites? I've been primarily using FF for a decade and haven't encountered any.

  • Spotify is still signing unfair contracts with those labels though. They could throw their weight around and demand higher cuts for artists but they aren't. No need to let them off the hook when they're choosing to participate and profit in a corrupt industry, IMO.

  • This isn't pointed out enough, IMO. People act like it went sharply downhill under Musk but this is the platform that enabled extremists for years and only even banned Trump when he literally tried to overthrow democracy. Maybe Twitter was good in like 2010 but I really don't think Musk changed THAT much about it.

  • I've always wondered if people like you existed! Fascinating.

Not criticizing you, just personally I don't want any recommendation algos in any of my media.

  • I agree with your overall sentiment but am I crazy or is RSS more popular than ever?

  • Creators are victims here too. For most of them YouTube was a very different place when they were beginning their careers on the platform.

Not that it changes your point, I just feel it's important to keep in mind that the process of "Enshittification" sucks for everyone (well, except shareholders).

  • Great guide, total newbies might want to look into something like CasaOS too just for simplicity's sake.

  • Y'know for the amount of ads I've seen for Nebula and CuriosityStream it hadn't even crossed my mind. Thanks.
