  • Making Twitter/X an 'everything app.' if we've learned anything from WeChat in China, LINE in Japan & Taiwan and KakaoTalk in South Korea, such apps can be hugely influential.

The premium tier of access makes it actually usable as a social media platform, my prime complaint about Twitter beforehand was that you'd never get any interaction with your posts unless you were a celebrity with a big following. Musk's dumbassery in this case was selling verified access.

I don't think pandering to the right wing is a good idea either, but if Musk made X a secure messaging platform, a decent dating app, capable of hosting livestreams and even a way to support creators which cut out middlemen like Patreon, OnlyFans, etc, it would have been huge.

  • Does HML actually exist?

  • If he built X.com as a video sharing site to rival YouTube instead of rebranding Twitter and turning it into a Nazi bar, I think people would have a more favourable view of him.

Musk can have good ideas but he's being blinded by his own hubris.

  • I thought the performance hit was quite substantial, like 20% to 30% lower frame rates from using dxvk. Maybe things have improved?

Native Vulkan support is of course the holy grail but so few games support it. The only few I can think of are Valve games.

Not even World of Warcraft supports Vulkan, and they've supported OpenGL for so long.

  • 3.82% is actually pretty damn good. And if Windows 12 pushes us into a subscription model I can see that gap rising.

Also, if/when DirectX gets native Linux support, or DXVK/VKD3D matches the API in performance, that'll be it.

Personally I'm thanking Valve for this.

  • That's kinda accurate actually.

One of the biggest problems with Britain is that everything is centralized around London while other cities and towns are an afterthought to the government.

London is the only city with an underground railway network. It is also one of only three cities (Newcastle and Glasgow being the others) with any kind of metro transit network. Public transport outside of these three cities is heavily overpriced and monopolized at a local level by a handful of big bus operators, i e. First, Stagecoach, Arriva, Go Ahead.

Another massive problem is that we simply aren't building new homes because doing so would harm landlord profits. Londoners are moving further out because London is so overpriced.

Things are so bad here that Bristol (the city I live in) is now the second-most expensive city to live in behind the capital. Before that, the idea of us overtaking SE England or even Bath was unthinkable.

  • This is peak YandereDev.

  • At what point does this go from being a counter terrorist operation to a genocide?

  • This may be a shocker to many of you but it costs money to produce TV shows.

Cable was lucrative because of the subscription fees and the fact that channels could still run ads. People are now expecting to pay $10 a month for access to everything ad-free when previously they'd have to pay multiple times this amount to watch shows at scheduled times, and still sit through ad breaks. There was no such thing as an online on-demand catalogue just fifteen years ago.

Now imagine that networks are making far less money per viewer, have to pump out shitloads of original content to keep people subscribed (and in the case of Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and others, mitigate the risk of copyright holders jacking up fees for third party content), can't run ads to supplement their income and have to deal with huge levels of inflation because governments had to print a fucktonne of money to bail us out of a financial crisis and a global pandemic.

Piracy has raised a generation of entitled cheapskates that refuse to pay for content, and these are the people who are most likely going to break a lot of studios and publishers.

The only real saving grace here is that this could be the downfall of Disney, which would be a net boon for copyright reform. Disney are the core reason why US copyright law is so fucked and why we're only now close to seeing Steamboat Willie (first Mickey Mouse cartoon from 1924) enter the public domain.

  • You've just made Jojo's Bizarre Adventure a work of comedy.

    I'd legit watch that 🤣

  • You misunderstand. I am not excusing the incel community. Any sympathy I had for them died years ago, and frankly I think any guy who thinks women deserve retribution because they won't sleep with them is a fucking coward.

But here's the thing, I think it's a horrific symptom of our societal ills, not a cause. Inceldom is an economic issue first and foremost.

We are a society that profiteers from human misery in so many ways. Men are judged quite harshly for their wealth, status and their ability to provide, even when we've made great strides to bring about equality between the sexes. Wealth inequality has created a predominantly male underclass. This affects many things like being able to afford a home, access to physical and mental healthcare, etc.

Another thing that I think doesn't help is how we've commodified sex in so many ways, but that's a very deep subject that would take me way too long to go into.

Online dating specifically is a monopoly headed by just two parent companies. They want your experience to be as miserable as humanly possible so that they can sucker you into paying the cost of several MMO subscriptions just to use the premium tier of their apps.

The problem isn't women, it's that Bumble Inc and Match Group couldn't give a flying FUCK about the integrity of their platforms. Socially awkward people depend on these apps to find love and their world view is being poisoned by a lack of interest from anybody who isn't a bot, sex worker, scam artist or a lady from the other side of the world seeking to marry their way into their country.

  • I dunno either.

And people wonder why incels are a thing....

  • I mean I agree in the sense that it's a weird fuckin meme. I personally don't get foot fetishes.

Also, I like being on Lemmy because it feels like I have to self-censor over on Reddit.

I can't even use words like 'cuck', 'e-girl', 'smurf', 'boost' or 'incel' on Reddit without most communities siccing automoderator on me.

  • Windows 12 may end up being my transition to Linux, especially if they go for a subscription model. If you told me just a decade ago that Linux was a viable OS for gaming, I would have laughed at you.

Valve have outdone themselves with Proton. So have those who worked on DXVK and VKD3D.

  • This is why I believe federation should be an opt-in process rather than servers being federated by default.

Some of you may remember when Lemmy World was flooded with CSAM by other hostile instances and had to temporarily disable image uploads.

  • Hentai depicting prepubescent girls. That shit is highly illegal in the UK, Switzerland and some US states and is punished as severely as CSAM.

  • So if I understand it, a bug has been identified that's potentially going to make diabetics OD on insulin and die.

    That's fucked.

  • Really don't know what to make of this comments section. I feel like if this were the World News subreddit, this thread would have already been locked and about 90% of the commenters banned, either by the mods or the Reddit admins.

It's surreal to see comments so hostile towards Islam, on Lemmy of all places... And some of these are arguments I often see racists throw around.

  • I'd prefer it if Lemmy didn't go mainstream. Reddit went down the toilet once it did.
