I don’t think most of them even have normal human empathy. I’ve seen lots and lots of these kinds of arguments, and what people seem to be missing in these arguments is that some people have no moral compass. It will give them no pain and no discomfort whatsoever.

Remember this: people used to take their kids and have a goddamned picnic while people were being lynched. It was family entertainment for them. We still have people among us that would go right back to that sort of thing if permitted.

I was just listening to the audiobook for Enlightenment Now.

And man is this a gut-punch: he was talking about the overall trend, worldwide, of capital punishment trending downwards. Including in the United States.

He talks a bit about how the U.S. is an outlier among first world countries in that we still even have it, and how we are in the company of some rather awful nation-states when it comes to still having the death penalty - China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, etc. You know, real beacons of freedom. Then he quotes someone (?) that said it may be possible that even in America, and even in the Southern states, it may trend to zero.

By 2026. The book is from 2018.

Yep. All of this. In just about every conversation about conservatives, it seems someone raises the spectre of what conservatism is really supposed to be about.

I’m not sure it’s all that useful to really delineate between what conservatives do and this theoretical version of conservative that largely seems to live in the minds of people like David Brooks.

Even in one of the most canonical examples of the “true” conservative - William F. Buckley, the conservative’s conservative - we quickly see how that kind of thing is deflated - he’s often thrown out there as some kind of standard-bearer who “stood up” to things like the Birchers (but then still had backchannels to them). He not only hurled a gay slur, but threatened physical violence on the air. And the book that put him on the map is the same kind of whining invective we see today from the right about how the universities are indoctrinating the children. And he wrote it 75 years ago.
