  • Bill Gates is probably the only one on the list I have a positive bias for cuz he's spent sooooooo much money buying goodwill.

  • Not really "heroes" but several pastors / youth leaders from when I was young got caught in sex scandals and embezzling. My childhood bully became a youth paster and got convicted of sex crimes against minors.

  • I agree with you. Internet forums were better before likes/etc.

Before you had to state an opinion to engage any idea. Which drives conversations. You had to stake your reputation via alias. Which is why forums built such strong communities.

There were certainly downsides and old style forums don't scale well for modern user levels.

But I think the defaultism of likes/voting lowers the bar of participation and in doing so also fundamentally lowers the quality of any conclusions derived therein.

  • To me "Robot Surgeon" means a human surgeon and a programmer/engineer got together and meticulously detailed every single step of the procedure such that the machine cannot behave outside of their expectations.

To me robot surgeons should remain machines.

  • Strap a solar thruster to the sun

So like if you visualize how the sun/planets actually move around the milky way. It seems plausible to focus solar flares to alter our trajectory. We'd still be stuck in the whirlpool but we could change lanes.

  • We'll still run into the same assumption/problem; shelf life.

Consider how memories work. Every time you remember something, your brain alters that memory slightly. Even looking at how the brain parses the data through several cortex (visual etc) implies that consciousness is potentially inseparable from the components of the brain. In this video about Cockatoo intelligence they speculate that birds brain anatomy causes them to think in ways that seem limited to us.

Basically we don't even know if its possible to preserve human consciousness for that long. Similar to cryogenics we have to question if reanimation is even fundamentally possible after centuries.

  • The signal isn't destroyed though. So one could argue that isolating it in the noise is doable with enough math.

Obviously the real limit is still distance since we'd need a radio dish like the size of earths orbit or something to pick up a signal weakened from many lightyears away.

  • You can even avoid buying chicken feed if you plant correctly!

  • In theory yes... but the oldest frozen specimen of humans we've found is only a few thousand years old. We don't even know if long term cryogenic reanimation is possible.

Assuming the ship travels at 10x our current capabilities we're still looking at ~8,000 years to reach our closest stellar neighbour at only 5 lightyears away.

  • I think the closest we will come is detecting radio signals from another species. But like obviously 2 way communication would be almost impossible due to sheer distance.

  • Completely expected that teens closer to 16 would be able to bypass it. Same thing happens with alcohol and people almost of age. But I expect younger children cannot bypass so easily so it's still a net positive.

IMO the more productive solution is to restrict cellphone use during school. They've recently done that in my area and both students and faculty have positive responses.

  • I was moreso getting at the social engineering bits. But yea the writing and production was well done for sure!

  • Rami Malek did a decent job of making "real hacking" look cool in Mr Robot

  • Even if they are leaving theyre not going home. They've just been assigned a new area to terrorize.

  • The day Trump won the GOP nomination I predicted it would lead to the dissolution of the United States. People in my office actually laughed at me.

We're already seeing state level replacements for federal entities such as the CDC. Californias tax surplus alone could cover most of the EPA/CDC/FEMA/NASA if they chose to fund those entities directly instead of paying taxes to the feds.

  • It's too late for that. ICE has galvanized a culture of oppression since the 7 or so murders they've committed. Maybe ICE would have tucked tail a year ago but now they'll double down. Meanwhile Trump is itching to justify actual military intervention.

  • Yup. I called this shit the day Trump won the GOP nomination. People in my office actually laughed at me.

  • Its not a defense its a line of inquiry. Why do you think people asking what he's accused of are defending him? That doesn't make sense.
