  • Pluribmind is just boring as fuck with zero personality.

You would think that smooshing all the brains of humanity together in a psychic melange would do something more than produce a being that's been stripped of anything interesting to say, but the show scrupulously manages to avoid falling into that trap.

  • Would recommend, the main trilogy is great, and there's two additional standalone novels (I just finished Translation State)

  • Everyone disagreeing all the time is clearly bad, so I'm going to write a show that illustrates the horrors of everyone agreeing all the time.

  • But not buying lunch is how I'm going to be able to afford a house. Pick a lane, darnit

  • I think the combination of the fact that the hive mind thing is such a common crutch for sci fi writers who have written themselves into a corner and the fact that the notion is so antithetical to our actual experiences as individuals makes it hard to interpret the inconsistencies or contradictions in how the plurb works as something other than failures in the central premise. Any irrationality can be chalked up to the virus reprogramming people to be a certain way so it's not really an exploration of group consciousness so much as an exploration of a virus pulling a cordyceps and getting humanity to climb up a giant grass blade and dangle there spreading spores and accomplishing that by networking everyone's brains together. And it's not like that can't make for a good story, but everyone who's trying to pull lessons or allegories aren't going to be successful because that premise doesn't really map to anything.

  • Bravo Vince collecting the apple check to do whatever he wants with a sci-fi show that can basically magic any scenario he wants out of thin air and be patted on the back for it.

I dropped off after the first couple of episodes for this reason. It seemed like pseudoprofundity; the premise is pretty much what if everyone in the world got absorbed into a single human blob that just wanted one middle-aged white misanthrope to be happy? That sure is a crazy situation, now time for forty five minutes of artistically arrayed half-empty gin bottles.

  • The rebels are currently quietly waiting for the opportunity to unveil their Kinetic Reindeer Anti-air Munitions and Present Unwrapping System for maximum shock and awe.

  • Especially infuriating given that Bush is reportedly exploring a comeback tour.

  • Guess it's marginally better than them actually being competent

  • Yes, but even if the information is technically all out there, the size of the release means that not everything can be equally emphasized. Apparently this JSC interiors example is a popular one because it's all over Google now, something I imagine would not be great for the victim. Independent investigators should still be exercising discretion in what they choose to foreground.

  • Not to knock all the work that went into putting this guide together, but shouldn't we be a little worried that the example being used is exposing the identity of a victim? Theoretically all someone has to do now is track down the registration paperwork for the company that was mentioned and then they know who JSC is.

  • There are definitely enough examples of it not being an effective strategy that you'd think they'd stop pre-emptively surrendering, but who knows, maybe there's enough reactionary private donors that they they still think there's a way to placate to victory.

  • That's just a big beagle cuddle puddle

  • Yeah, I don't know how seriously UO's program was being taken before but I would be pissed if I had a degree with their name on it right now.

  • The Oklahoma University chapter of the American Association of University Professors put out a statement in support of the TA:

Essentially, nothing is new here. OU claims without providing any supporting or specific reasons why Mel Curth was removed. They have claimed in the past in press releases that this was due to supposed and disturbing claims of “religious discrimination” that clash with academic freedom. Is it now? Instead, they hide behind vague statements and essentially assertions of “trust us”. At this point, they need to show us and not tell us. And once again, OU is making an employment decision public, which is inflaming the situation.

  • Probably emblematic of how scared universities are after Trump fucked with academic funding. Admin decided to put on a show of obsequiousness to avoid getting hit with something worse, at the cost of whatever international reputation the psych program at University of Oklahoma had. Can't imagine anyone from the sane parts of the world wanting to host a conference there now.

  • As a proportion of income, overall food expenditures are lower:

Standard caveats apply, this doesn't minimize the struggles of our food insecure population and the benefits are not evenly distributed.
