  • I mean there is Waterfox, which is avaible on desktop as well as on Android. There is also the Zen browser, which is amazing for Desktop. Both theese browsers are fully FOSS and have explicitly positioned themselves against AI (Statement from Waterfox and Statement from Zen). And the great thing is, basicly all Firefox forks can easily sync interoperably and end to end encrypted thanks to Firefox Sync, so you could use Zen Browser on the desktop and sync it with Waterfox on your phone.

  • Well, your entire argument is based on very vague anecdotal observations and you didn't mention any concrete examples, so arguing against your points feels kind of pointless.

    What were the exact things you said on which communities, that got you "dogpiled"?

    And please just be honest, you are not some kind of politian trying to win a debate by any means possible, I see this more as a conversation.

  • I would say, Lemmy (or the Fediverse in general is just like real life. You can say anything you want, but don't expect anyone to invite you to their party or talk to you, if you are being an jerk.

    Meaning, that noone can ban you from Lemmy for anything you say. But they certainly can ban you from their own instance and / or not federate with an instance, you are on if they don't like what you say.

    Also, as a general word of advice, just be a decent, nice person and you'll probably be fine. Online or offline. A major idea of the fediverse is to imagine and be part of a better world and if we engage with each other respectfully, everyone is better off.

  • Just because you are free to way whatever you want, doesn't mean, that anybody has to listen or agree with you. If people don't agree with your opinion and they let you know it, they are exercising their own freedom of speech.

    And also, nobody owes you to platform your beliefs uncritically. Either you find a community, that wants to engage with you (and you talk to the other communities that wanna engage with your community) or you create your own community (and yeah, that could cost you a small amount of money and time). My point is, you can't just expect people to let you use the resources that they pay for to platform opinions that they find harmful enough to not wanna talk to you again. Saying that someone banning someone from their community is impeading on your free speech is just like complaining that someone didn't invite you to their party because you insulted them.

  • To your first question: Google released a list of all "certified" android devices and it's basically every phone from every halfway known brand. So yeah, you will be effected. The only devices unaffected by this would probably be no name Chinese phones (probably also Huawei, but I am not shure) and IOT devices like smart fridges. The best way to avoid this would probably be installing a custom ROM, like Graphene OS.

    To your second question, the Android System already controlls the package Installation process, do you know the "Do you want to install this APK" popup, you geht every time you want to install an app outside of the playstore? That's controlled by the android operating systen and by extension Google. In the future, every android apk would have to have a unique "developer key" attached to it and if it isn't verified by google, the android system can just refuse to install the apk. For that, you don't have to go through the playstore, but you still would have to go through a verification process with Google for every app, you make. How that will be implemented in detail is not yet quite known.

    Google could have done this much earlier, it isn't hard to implement, but you can't make it in a way that only negatively impacts ransomware or pirated apps. And most sideloading on Android is perfectly legitimate, so the reason, why Google hasn't done it, because there is (deservately) a big pushback from developers.

  • Yeah, it can definetely be a great solution, but the idea for this was specifically to be more independent from big tech. We already habdle stuff like registering for camps over Office 365, but I wanted to introduce Nextcloud to replace that, because I don't think it's a good idea to let Microsoft handle personal data of like a hundred people, that probably don't even know, that they are giving away their data to Microsoft there. But again, I don't wanna judge anyone for using things like that, Nextcloud can be a pain to maintain, especially for non technical people.

  • Yeah, I guess the plan would be (if we decide to use an old labtop) to have a similar backup system to my home server, so one daily incremental backup with something like borgbackup to a newly bought external hard drive and automated updates using watchtower (I heard major nextcloud upgrades can be tricky though, so I an not shure if it would be a good idea to automate those). I guess it would still suck if the laptop unexpectedly failed and we would have to scramble to find new hardware though, how long would you expect an old laptop to last as a server?

  • Yeah, I totally get what you mean, I am kind of expecting that aswell, but at least I know, that other scouts groups in the area already have a nextcloud and it is actively beeing used, so I have some hopes in that regard. But yeah, getting them to use something like Matrix is probably pretty unrealistic.

  • Yeah, it's like that for some torrents, but some also work fine. And the ones that don't work, you can revive by manually downloading the zip file from their servers, I guess.

  • At least for VR stuff, I find Linux to work pretty well with ALVR Streamer, which is basically an open source version of Virtual Desktop.

    For anticheat, there are if course no real good solutions yet, for that, we just need better market share to pressure game developers.

  • Yeah, that would kind of be my plan: To ask in one post for submissions, filter out the valid ones and then let the community vote on only the valid ones. I hope, that the mods will accept the results though, for that to work, we need big support from the community, so that I have a convincing argument

  • Nope, you can't train a good diffusion model from scratch with just a few thousand images, that is just delusion (I am open for examples though). Adobe Firefly is a black box, so we can't verify their claims, obviously they wouldn't admit, if they broke copyright to train their models. We do however have strong evidence, that google, openai and stability AI used tons of images, which they had no licence to use. Also, I still doubt that all of the people, who sold on Adobe Stock either knew, what their photos are gonna be used for or explicitly wanted that or just had to accept it to be able to sell their work.

  • Well, but you are not of an opposing ideology, your sub is called "ask Lemmy", not "ask AI obsessed people", so your definition doesn't even make sense. I honestly don't understand why you people insist on painting me in such a negative light, just because I am new. That is called bullying by the way. I didn't even intend this thread to blow up in such a way, I guess a lot of people seem to care.
