  • I see! My metaphor was mainly meant to illustrate that whether anticheat is directly related to the current security issue is orthogonal to why I thought it was relevant to bring up. I could have picked a better one that didn't imply that their misplaced concern about Linux cheaters actually consumes resources.

    Maybe a better metaphor would be a municipality refusing to do something about a small issue (maybe poor transit to a specific neighborhood) and also actively refusing to let that neighborhood solve the problem themselves (proton devs) with the excuse that allowing that neighborhood to have transit would cost too much (even if the neighborhood were to do it themselves) and cause more crime (painting Linux users as hackers) all the while some completely unrelated group is actually causing the crime elsewhere.

  • I'm assuming this is a good faith question and that you're not just just trying to play word games: they're focused on scapegoating Linux by refusing to support it and blaming it for supposedly being a security nightmare. I'm pointing out that this is misplaced obviously because they have bigger concerns, as evidenced by the article.

  • I think you're misunderstanding why I'm bringing it up. It's not because I think their server is protected by anticheat, but because they're both forms of security. And my point is that their security posture is focused on the wrong area by scapegoating Linux instead of where they should be focusing, server security. If you don't think their misplaced focus on Linux (which I agree is unrelated to server security) has anything to do with getting hacked then I don't know what to tell you.

    To give it an analogy, if your local government had unmaintained roads and you commented about how they spend tons of resources on police patting down everyone to prevent them from planting gardens, sure you could say it's "not related to roads", but that's the whole point of bringing it up. It's unrelated which is why it's dumb to be focusing on it. Client sided anticheat is not equal to server security, but the misplaced security focus makes it relevant even if it's not specifically on topic.

    It's like if a boat was sinking due to a huge hole and your captain was busy trying to stop people from tightening loose bolts on wobbly chairs. Yeah it's not the same thing, but that doesn't mean it isn't useful to point out the misplaced focus.

    Does that make sense?

    (Edited to make the metaphors illustrate both 1. unrelated issues being relevant to a discussion within the scope of misplaced focus and 2. that the misplaced focus in this case isn't even because they're spending resources on the other issue, but rather trying to scapegoat and block people from fixing the unrelated issue)

  • I would replace it. Sometimes I push my luck and for minor or unexpected errors I just clear the error and re-add the drive, but this many errors is likely a solid sign.

  • At a glance it looks like they only have 3 different strengths and no provisions for astigmatism. My interest is in fine tuning my prescription in increments of 0.25 as well as fine tuning my astigmatism in several degree increments so it wouldn't be of much use to me.

    Edit: For anyone else curious about doing this on a budget, check out "trial lens sets", it's just a case of a couple hundred lenses you can get for around $200 that includes close to what looks like every prescription under the sun, including astigmatism and prism(!!). You're be manually swapping, stacking, and keeping track of every strength but it has strengths as low as 0.12 and looks like they include frames to pop them into.

  • I have no idea what the machine is even called haha. It probably depends on whether you need just spherical or if you have astigmatism and need a cylindrical axis too.

    You could probably partially DIY it with enough time and effort, huygen optics on YouTube does something like that, idk how complicated it is to make an astigmatism prescription.

    I've thought about DIYing some of the glasses process, but only the diagnostic part. You can get that machine that lets you try basically any prescription for under like $1k, so you could use that to adjust your prescription and then try to order the actual lenses through somewhere online. Lens grinding seems tedious if you're doing it by hand without an expensive automated machine.

  • I think they're saying that this doesn't make the prescription. This copies the shape of the model lens but you need to feed it both the model lens and a finished prescription lens made by another machine so that this machine can cut out the needed shape.

    In other words, you still need machine to grind the precise prescription into a circular blank I presume.

  • My general experience is swiping through hundreds of people to get a few matches that seem promising only for none of them to respond to my intro messages (which I do take the time to write something unique and related to interests on their profile). The few that do respond typically stop responding after a day or two, I usually give it a couple weeks and then unmatch. Rinse and repeat for about a year and I might eventually end up managing to go out for coffee once a year, and it's really a coin toss whether a second date happens.

    It's pretty discouraging but I did meet my current partner on tinder. It just takes a lot of time and patience, and not letting the experience make you disillusioned or jaded.

  • The problem is uline is a 1 stop shop for many businesses to buy a whole range of supplies, not just boxes. At my last job basically everything in the office came from uline, including the desks, trash cans, hand soap, mops, the disposable cups in the kitchen, and many of the warning signs plastered around the machine shop. The problem was known then but we weren't successful in convincing them to replace uline with 5-10 other separate companies.

  • Keep in mind that elementary is doesn't provide an in place upgrade path between major versions, I didn't realize this when I set it up for my parents so they've been stuck on one major version since I can't backup, fresh install, and restore remotely.

    ml is a self choosen label though, so people can choose not to use it.

    And people can choose to treat people the same based on that label, and I can choose to think it's immature. And at the same time I can not care if people choose to cut themselves off from ml.

    No, I advocate for not dismissing people solely based on their chosen instance without taking into account their actual views. I do not advocate against blocking ml entirely, because I don't view being cut off from people who make those types of assumptions as a loss for me.

    You've spent multiple comments expressing that lack of care.... which doesn't make it seem like you don't care, but instead makes it seem like this bugs you because you feel its unfair, and you've said as much here.

    Only because you and other people have spent multiple comments not understanding me so I'm only repeating myself. I'm only commenting because this is the third shit stirring post by the same user, and I only chimed in to another ml user that I'm not bothered if people decide to block ml because it's a win to me to avoid immature people and in my view a loss to others because I spend most of my time on lemmy giving tech support to others.

    No, I engaged with someone else on ml, and then you couldn't resist engaging with me. I don't see what's confusing about this. I don't think I'm missing anything by not being able to engage with this post. Yet it's here, so I'm engaging with it. That doesn't mean I value this engagement or would miss it at all. Let me again repeat that my preference is to ignore these types of posts, which is why I refrained from commenting on the other similar posts OP has made in the past. It's kind of silly to assume that engagement means you necessarily value the content.

    Do you similarly think engaging with a racist by arguing with them means you must also value their content or presence? Of course not. Chiming in to say that I would not miss them, but also disagree with their views, is not contradictory.

    Anyhow, I think I'll go back to ignoring these types of posts. I think this kind of blanket assumption about people based on their instance is a net negative to the community. That said, I don't think it's at all inconsistent to both view OPs attitude as immature while simultaneously not caring if they decide to block ml, precisely because being blocked by immature people is not a net negative to me.

  • When I say I don't usually engage with these types of posts, it's because I remember several others like it that I chose to ignore. Checking OPs history, it seems they posted every other one that I remember. I don't count it as a loss at all if people like this make their own decision to block ml because I'd rather not see this kind of drama all the time. It doesn't matter to me if they see it as a loss or a gain, I'm still gonna be here engaging with and helping people who need help in various communities. To me it's not a loss if someone isn't able to receive my help if they decide that it's not worth it to them - that's their decision to make, and I'd rather not worry about people who are going to behave like OP.

    The constant handwringing and wishing about ml users suffering more from being blocked because you don't like certain users honestly reeks of a sore ex who wants to twist the knife. If ml bothers certain users (I'm looking at OP especially) then just block ml and stop posting about it repeatedly (looking at you OP).
