  • yt-dlp was created in October 2020, Soulseek in April 2001, torrents in Juli 2001. Your "ol' reliable" was created 5 years ago, 19 years younger than its competition. Youtube itself was founded in 2005.

I'm not sure you know what "ol' reliable" means ;)

  • Generally I agree, they're still just people like anyone else. However, they're in very special situations, and very rare/special experiences have very rare/special impact. It's very much not easy to be "normal" in these situations, which is why I said what I said.

  • Absolutely no difference. Unless you get to billionaire territory, because they are such a small sample that only happens with a very specific combination, there is no real difference between humans' mindsets. Someone with net worth $10 mill has the same chance to be loving as a homeless person with negative net worth as has the same chance as some middle class person.

  • You are such a silly goose, I love it

  • As always, there's multiple reasons for things. You did a great job breaking down as much as possible :) the other comments are all right, but you are comprehensive :)

  • I'm not sure what you mean exactly... Just looked in my block list and I've blocked yiffit.net and like 6 or so anime communities, and I don't remember the last time I had anime in my all feed.

  • Some living situations have time-consuming storage places of bikes, like I can imagine some apartment building with cellars for bikes or shit like that.

But locking your bike at the target place? Takes seconds. Also, I'm relatively sure for most people, retrieving the bike also takes at most a minute.

Now look at the graph. Shift the bike 1.5 minutes upwards, you still get almost exactly the same effect, the bike is still faster for a lot of the 1 mile of walking.

So sure, it's important to take into account the switching costs, but this concept still holds true most of the time.

  • As corollary to the other comments, lemmyverse.net to find non-political communities to subscribe to.

  • You may be about to figure out that almost everything is controlled by the richest people on Earth, and that you are allowed to talk about that is bad for them.

  • Hope you don't use (almost) any other messaging app either. If a single unsubstantiated article is enough to make you stop using something, you should be using almost nothing anywhere.

  • Try using an external image hoster like directupload.eu if you want bigger images :)

  • It depends on the server you use. Some even don't allow uploads at all.

  • Maybe they started playing the FlyingSquidGame

  • Which is what I acknowledged with my last sentence. All I'm saying is that both methods could be worthwhile, and in a perfect world where everyone is educated, everyone ignoring the scammer would be better.

  • The DDOS of having your users scammed, spammed, them seeing illegal/harmful content, propaganda, whatever bots do.

Trying to get rid of bots is a worthwhile endeavor. How exactly you do it, and I criticize captchas as well, is up to debate, yes. But dismissing it completely just means you haven't really noticed what those measures do. It's like an IT department that just works and that management thinks is unnecessary.

  • Because like I said, different measures hold back different bots.

If there are 3 bot softwares, maybe 1 can solve captcha and use accounts, 1 can only make accounts, 1 can only use captcha.

With only account login you get 2 bots, with only captcha you also get 2 bots, with captcha before login you only get 1 bot.

  • MOBA - massive onslaught bullet arena

  • So I say tracking is the problem, and you say that tracking is the problem? Good that we agree :D

  • Bots are a problem. No single measure completely gets rid of them. Each measure just removes some of the bots. I personally think accounts are a decent measure, everyone should have a password manager anyway that lets them automatically log in on all their devices.

The problem of course is the tracking that's being done with the accounts, but I think the accounts themselves aren't the problem.
