  • You know, we also have a very sturdily built Brother sewing machine and I never noticed that they're the same company that made our printer.

  • How am I to tell who is a tankie, vs a wumao, vs a Russian bot troll? It can be hard to tell who is commenting in good faith.

I'm kidding, of course. I just block them all. No one using these talking points is worth my time.

  • Gotta love tankies unironically parroting Putin's disinformation.

  • its pretty clear. You're conversing with a tankie.

  • As an outsider with a researcher PhD in the family, I suspect its an issue of how the institutions measure success. How many papers? How many cites? Other metrics might work, but probably not as broadly. I assume they will also care about the size of your staff, how much grant money you get, patents held, etc.

I suspect that, short of a Nobel prize, it is difficult to objectively measure how one is advancing scientific progress (without a PhD committee to evaluate it.)

  • Brother gang, rise up

  • More important question for me:

what is the oldest MacOS with xcode support (and therefore oldest I can run brew on)?

I keep meaning to figure this out.

  • So? He stays pretty busy with Solid / Inrupt and his other advocacy (e.g., the OP article...)

Perhaps he sees the personal blog format as a bit egotistical or otherwise not fit for purpose. Or perhaps he just isn't a naturally talented writer. Its not as if he's shy about sharing his thoughts outside that.

Also worth noting that he and Bruce Schneier, who is a much more prolific writer, share many of the same views and partner together at Inrupt.

  • My candidate may not win, but damnit they will count my vote and know that I dissent.

Which is the same exact reason I vote third party despite them mostly not winning.

edit: keep downvoting me. I'm sure that will help convince me to vote for your team, just like the last 50 times it happened.

  • Just as an FYI, whether lie detector tests are accurate or not, lying in a polygraph interview for a federal background check is a crime. Polygraph interviews can and do sometimes lead to criminal prosecution.

  • Yeah, let's turn our space into a cesspool! We'll show those darned invaders!

  • Intentionally inflammatory and misleading headlines on Lemmy? Pshaw. The hell you say.

  • I called him Hiroshi because he vaguely reminds me of the guy from Heroes (Masi Oka.)
