I was under the impression that according to the law, they were not permitted to have live rounds in their weapons though...which basically means they're "unarmed". Maybe I misunderstood.

This was one of the main things that WikiLeaks got in so much trouble for exposing. It was so bad, that Hillary Clinton wanted to actually drone strike Julian Assange over it.
"Privacy is dead" only once you lose all legal rights to your own information. It may be "already out there", but at least you still have some legal recourse for when your information is being used by a 3rd party, without your consent. (or at least it should)
No one should have the right to just clone your identity, or make AI images in your likeness, or even sell your confidential information to advertisers, against your wishes. If there aren't laws already protecting your rights in that regard, where you live...there should be.
As they should. But the fact that he chose to follow an obviously illegal order, doesn't absolve the ones who gave that order. This should in no way, take the heat off Hegseth...or Trump himself.
There's no possible scenario where this was "lawful". This was illegal in every conceivable way, and every single soldier involved knew it was illegal, but still followed that order.
Why would the right get behind this idea? They don't want the government investing in anything. They just want private companies to assume the entire burden, and offload the expense directly onto the consumer.
