That there is no perfect defense. There is no protection. Being alive means being exposed; it's the nature of life to be hazardous—it's the stuff of living.

  • The staffing and funding is the real difficult part.

Agreed. I will also add that a lack of leadership and gumption is also a challenge. You need commitment and inspiration to successfully execute such a project in a democracy.

I am not technical enough to evaluate whether what I am saying is correct, but my concern with using AOSP is that such a decision will result in 2nd tier clone apps.

It seems to me it would make much more sense to leverage industry policy (technical requirements, grants for developers) to develop a "clean slate" solution.

I had a Nokia N900, it worked pretty well for 2010 (apps weren't as big then and mobile web worked surprising well). I am done with Android and American corruption. I am not buying another Android phone; looking forward to getting a Jolla device once they add support for Ukraine (even with no official support).

  • You are likely correct that forking Android would be a better (cheaper and more efficient) option. But I can't get rid of the feeling that it's best to do a clean break with American oligarchy and make design choices that reflect regional priorities.

  • Agreed. Hardware supply chains and ecosystem externalities are an extremely challenging area and it will take both industrial policy and de facto tariffs to raise the cost of devices with non-local components.

I was refering to the software/OS. An operating system and platform that has nothing to do with Android, iOS or HarmonyOS. I think in theory, software can have faster market adoption.

  • Not a hardware domain, but the same could be said for NFTs or "web 3.0". With the caveat that 3D TV isn't a scam.

  • How it does very well and it even gets up to 10K+.

I just realized that I can't pre-order even if I wanted to since I am not in EU/UK/Norway/Switzerland.

We really need an Android alternative with no involvement from American or Chinese companies.

  • The writing was on the wall when they started getting American VC money.

American VC culture is anthenema to truly user focused products.

  • How well does this work for W10?

Some of the mods explicitly mention supporting only W11, does that mean others are tested/usable on W10?

SteamOS vs. Windows on dedicated GPUs: It’s complicated, but Windows has an edge

    arstechnica.com /gadgets/2025/12/steamos-vs-windows-on-dedicated-gpus-its-complicated-but-windows-has-an-edge/
  • Can't buy in at this point, but I will most probably buy it early next year, hopefully the crowd-buy goes through.

I can't participate in ecosystems run by corrupt Americans (such as Android or iOS). They've been posturing about "freedoms" for so long that they've totally lost understanding of the true meaning of freedom.

I am done with their bullshit.

  • It's not really like Graphene. Its roots stem from the Nokia N900; a full linux device.

I actually owned the N900 for a year in 2010 (lost it, I was pretty young), it was a literal Linux phone. Apps weren't as important back then and it was in many ways easier to use mobile web apps.

  • Surprise, surprise!

While I've been into computer hardware for decades (built my first PC when I was 16), I don't understand people who are "fans" of AMD or Nvidia or any other company. The best option is to have a large number of competitors (at least 7-10 on a global level) in every major core technology area (operating systems, cloud services, office products, social media, different CPU architectures - x86, ARM, RISC-V. GPU design fabs and so on) with such an intense level of competition that something like Zuckerberg's $60 B+ spend on metaverse BS would be impossible (because their margins would be too low).

  • Try and sell it for parts?

    • Better on-boarding - For non-technically inclined users, Fedi can be challenging. I personally strongly oppose the "join by selecting instance" type sites. There should be an algorithm automatically signing up users based on region, refer header and perhaps some sort of random selection
    • With respect to Threadi, when a user is logged in, all links to instance/communities should automatically be transformed to the "view via your instance format" (!technology@lemmy.world).
    • Movement to Piefed (I am aware I am posting from a Lemmy account, this one is used for managing !hardware@lemmy.world, I used Piefed) - tankies are a major turn off for people across the globe and across the political spectrum.
    • Target users who are recognize the severe dangerous of US oligarchy. More and more people are recognizing that the American model is a dead end.
    • Target open source communities. I don't understand why r/linux or r/BSD are not making a move to directing users towards Threadi

And most importantly: post, comment, upvote.

Note, I am doing some of these thing when I can.

  • I generally agree with your thinking at a high level.

I wouldn't be so pessimistic though. Not saying everything will magically work out OK, it will probably get worse before it gets better. In the long term, oligarchs too subject to human weaknesses. hubris, factual ignorance, ignoring the notion humans aren't like parasite and can be very unpredictable.

That being said, this is all in the long term. We might really be fucked for the next 30 years.

  • Don't really remember which Stable Diffusion model was used. I followed a guide.

I am just looking for generation of simple two tone flat icons and very basic 3D photo images for products. It to save time making presentations. I would usually just cook something up based on free iconsets or Google images. It actually doesn't take long.

Gemini works pretty well for this (and support multi -model prompts), but I would prefer to use local models.

  • So the consumer market is not worth it?

I wonder why they didn't sell the brand to a third party, I guess they don't want to be tied to providing RAM.

  • I have a 3080 with 10 GB VRAM.

I wasn't getting very good results with Automatic1111, it felt like I was spending more time fiddling with config than getting the images I was looking for (nothing special mostly generic home hardware type objects, but done in a specific and consistent style and view).

32 GB VRAM won't be common for at least another 5-7 years IMO, perhaps more.

  • The corrupt oligopolists have completely given up on QA; why would they bother when they don't feel any real competitive pressure.

AFAIK, this has been happening as far back as Windows 8. I believe they had a giant pool of physical PCs (laptops, pre-builts and various popular component combinations for desktop) that they physically tested updates on, but they scrapped all of it because they know they don't need to worry about competition.
