It wasn't tech that solved this issue, it was legislation. The avenues for hawking your wares became much smaller and more scrutinized, therefore much harder to make a buck selling people's shit.

They e all got agents, who are driven by making money. Artists ha e a say on their venues though, so when shit goes down, they can pull out because "they* never committed in the first place. Agent says "here's a gig" and they say great, until they find out it's a presidential puff party and they get a chance to back out before the contracted deadline. Standard boiler plate business transaction.
