Avatar is kinda basic and gets hate for being "fern gully in space" and for erasing (appropriating?) real indigenous struggle. For me, Cameron's tech fetishism and direction make up for it on a technical level, and the obvious anti-colonial-extraction make up for it on a thematic level. This is a big budget Hollywood film that loudly says "blowing up attack helicopters and skewering Marines to protect your home is good and justified" without making the Na'vi kill a baby or something like so many other films do when their villain is fighting against the status quo for a better future.
is this a bad take? someone over thanksgiving said Avatar (2009) was the "worst movie i've ever seen" which seemed a bit dramatic but is making me reexamine my feelings.
I'm hosting company I enjoy but them staying up crazy late all night w/ the TV on plus their dog caused me to sleep like absolute shit and I feel like they gave me a sickness.
I have a pet theory that the horrors of industrialization, namely child labor, did a number on those effected, and that we're still dealing with the knock-on generational trauma.
like surely if you're working in a factory at 8 yrs old you're going to be fucked up and maybe not the best parent. striking out as a settler (american style) probably had it's own consequences on parenting too. not to say everything was perfect before that but it was certainly a big upheaval. people even wrote about it!
I enabled onedrive on my work PCs so I can keep my documents synced and that was a big mistake because the integration into file explorer is slowwww, and windows 11 made it even slower!
I love my kobo forma. I exclusively drop free range kepubs on it but the integrated store works great too.
