  • There is no sovereignty if you integrate closed models into all your services. The US uses sanctions non-stop. Imagine the power they'll have when other countries have their actual public services and half their economy dependent on AI models that can be throttled or cut off at the flip of a switch. Closed, corporate-owned models regulated by a foreign country are a massive risk for any country hoping to be sovereign.

  • I would say Canadians are more polite than friendly. Too polite to be really friendly a lot of the time.

  • In China’s system, when a parent buys a phone, they can lock it into child settings at the device level, which not only forces all apps to operate in child mode but also does stuff like turn off internet from 10pm to 6am, caps screen time depending on the child's age, and imposes break reminders after every 30 minutes of continuous use.

All the social media platforms are legally required to adjust algorithms and content for phones in child mode to only show age-appropriate content and to increase educational content, also to prevent dms with strangers, tipping, in-game purchases, and things like live broadcasting yourself.

All the online gaming platforms also require proof of age to use them or face restrictions.

So, there are much more sophisticated ways of making things work.

  • $1.7B over 12 years isn't much to attract and retain top research talent across critical industries, but it's better than nothing. Would be nice if it could multiples more than that.

  • lol, first time I've ever been accused of watching Fox News! People are buying into the idea that the US isn't so powerful and that allies are succeeding in pulling away because it's comforting, not because it's true. US power runs deeper than most would like to recognize. It's a dark and tragic reality.

  • You're welcome, Scotty! You fully deserve it.

  • Don't even need to read one paragraph down before being able to correctly guess this is another propaganda piece pushed by Scotty Sockpuppet.

  • Well, go ahead and underestimate them if you want then.

  • Yes, the US is awful, but it should not be underestimated. The power the US has over traditional allies and others is still massive, and everyone else suffers from the challenge of having to solve the coordination problem if they want to collectively oppose them. The US knows this and constantly works to defeat any attempts to coordinate. Also, the US government primarily represents collections of oligarchic powers and supranational corporate and financial powers that also have huge influence in the countries that could try to coordinate against them. So, their power is not just via the tools of the state itself, but also the supranational powers that control the state. Pretty hard to stop, and the US is still basically getting what it wants, even after all of the insanity and ugly corrupt bs of Trump.

  • The section on oversight is also critical. It basically gives the Minister the power to decide for themselves what information should not be made public as part of oversight, which is as good as saying there is no real oversight authority.

  • For anyone else who likes to go straight to the source, it's on pages 300-302 of the bill.

  • That is such a cool idea.

  • The US is gonna win the world cup by having ICE deport all their competition.

  • The CEO served in Israel's ground forces as part of the IDF. The company had contracts to send these trucks to Israel, but can't get the export permits for it. Would if they could. Thwy would be happy making even more money off of ethnic cleansing.

  • Both our defence and our intelligence services will need a bit of cleaning out at the top. Both have long been too integrated and dependent on the US.

  • I had a passport go through the wash in my jeans, twice. Kept using it.

  • I didn't even know that was possible. /goes to FOI own medical records

  • The funny thing is, they never seem to deny being a sock puppet when called out on it. I suppose because they don't want an actual discussion where more people actually go look and see what's obvious once you check.

  • Okay, there are definitely some forms of contact I would support, including but not limited to arrest, and none of them friendly.

  • I would rather Canada openly call a genocide what it is, and openly call war criminals what they are, and never have any contact with a monster like this guy again.
