Does this mean we’re at the “We know it’s happening and climate change is real but we still need to prioritize stockholders money over peoples lives” stage and we’re done with “Climate change isn’t real you stupid hippie”?

No, it’s to give the illusion that something is being done.

Makes as much sense as installing a smoke detector in your house then using your bbq indoors and acting surprised when you hear the alarm.

I would say that the bbq is already on and the ceiling is going black, and then the alarm is installed.

Isn’t the alarm system climate scientists? It is going off, and nobody is doing anything other than ignoring it.

This study is trying to reduce uncertainty around current theories, it’s more science by scientists. Uncertainty makes it harder to build effective policy.

These days, how many people react when a car alarm goes off? Other than “Can somebody stop that alarm?”

If only we could spend that 81 million on sustainable energy expansion or something. We don’t need an alarm to tell us when we’re fucked because we already know we’re on the verge of fucked

A surge in new oil and gas production in 2024 threatens to unleash nearly 12bn tonnes of planet-heating emissions, with the world’s wealthiest countries – such as the US and the UK – leading a stampede of fossil fuel expansion in spite of their climate commitments, new data shared exclusively with the Guardian reveals.

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
