There must be a compelling reason they’re sticking with micro USB this long after everything else has gone USB C.
Cost - USB-C is more expensive
Could be a decent option (with the port hat) for simple Pi-Hole/NAS/Media Server (if you don’t need transcoding).
Why not just use a Pi Zero 2W for that? It doesn’t need the breakout board.
I keep hoping they will develop a model that can dynamically transcode a couple of streams concurrently, so I can move my media server over to a Pi. But I am pretty sure that will never happen. It’s just not in the intended use for a Pi. Oh well, I still have my old mini PC for that. And I know there are other cool things I could do with this.
Just curious, is a no-transcoding setup not viable?
In most cases it would be okay. But I have a few files that need on the fly transcoding. I guess another option would be for me to go back and convert them.
Tradeoffs, right?
Convert them for the mobile devices, but now your media server has to know which file to serve to which device.
If Jellyfin had that intelligence, I’d happily pre-convert all my files and pay the storage cost.
