Company to shut 19 shops and convert five to Whole Foods outlets, after concept of stores without tills fails to catch on
Amazon did not confirm how many staff would be affected by the closures but it said it planned to offer workers new roles in other parts of the business.
“You can’t work at the store anymore but how about breaking your back in one of our huge warehouses?”
Sad for the people losing their jobs.
I always thought the concept was cool, but wasn’t there a news piece a couple years back that the “sensitive cameras” were actually just outsourced humans watching the camera feeds and noting what they took?

And it still performed atrociously! Also, they quickly gave up on the automation part and they’re all just regular grocery stores now.
The problem was the same with every single hardware project - all failed, naturally - Amazon had attempted without the help of their Lab126 skunkworks (later changed to the “devices org,” and now just a shell of what it once was): it was critically mismanaged by people who thought their egos mattered more than technology, and whose experience was only with pushing website updates and harassing employees, not shipping finished products.
This Is the first I’ve ever heard of Amazon Fresh.
Good. Sad for those working there and in the supply chains but fuck amazon.
Wasn’t the whole thing that people don’t work there?
Still needed people to stack the shelves and clean the floors and drive the lorries to deliver the stock. They just didn’t have people working tills.
