The U.S. State Department on Tuesday issued renewed criticism of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes , calling him harmful to U.S. companies and those seeking access to their markets .
“Alexandre de Moraes is toxic to all legitimate businesses and individuals seeking access to the United States and its markets. No foreign court can invalidate U.S. sanctions or spare anyone the serious consequences of violating them,” the U.S. agency stated.
The attack came in the context of a ruling by Supreme Court Justice Flávio Dino, who emphasized that foreign judicial decisions and laws cannot take effect in Brazil without prior review by the competent Brazilian authority , under penalty of violating national sovereignty.
The Trump administration reiterated that U.S. citizens are prohibited from conducting transactions with Moraes .
Furthermore, Moraes stated in an interview with the American newspaper The Washington Post that “there is no possibility of backing down even one millimeter” in relation to Jair Bolsonaro, after he planned the coup d’état in Brazil.
“And those outside the U.S. should proceed with caution: Those who provide material support to human rights violators face the risk of sanctions,” the U.S. statement said.
These comments also come amid pressure from the Donald Trump administration over the Supreme Court’s ongoing trial of former President Bolsonaro for the January 8, 2023, coup attempt.
