The AIA & National Trust should take him to court to prevent this! He should not be able to make permanent changes to the historic building that belongs to the American people.

What the fuck are they talking about?

Short version

On July 31, 2025, Trump unveiled his plan to demolish the East Wing and replace it with a 90,000-square-foot state ballroom.

Long version

White House Unveils Plan for $200 Million Ballroom, Trump’s Long-Sought Imprint

Officials said a 90,000-square-foot addition to the East Wing would be paid for by President Trump and other donors.

They’re not going to use real gold lol. It’s going to be Temu and Alibaba discount stuff painted gold. They’ll pocket the rest of the money. Trump decorates like those guys capitalists installed in post-soviet countries. Everything is faux finishes to keep costs low so they can charge more in labor. Labor is easier to account for as there’s no objective cost. You can charge anything for labor. This is what lets them legally keep extra money.

The amount of gold will drive the libs batty. If only they spent 1/10th on being angry that ~10,000,000 people will lose their healthcare and millions upon millions of lives will be wrecked.

    Bluesky comments

The hall of mirrors at Versailles is about 8,000 sqft; the largest room in the palace, the Gallery of Great Battles, is like 16,000 sqft.

    -–

90,000 square feet is almost twice the size of the entire White House itself

    -–

An average Costco is about 140,000 sq ft.

Now I’m no architect, and maybe material science is more advanced than I realize, but for such a large space that isn’t made entirely of sheet metal and girders, you would typically want some kind of support in the middle right? To stop the ceiling from falling in?

Congrats, you’re about as qualified as an architect to talk about structural support

      • I don’t know shit about fuck, but it seems like one can do incredible things distributing loads with steel trusses. that’s how they do with like superwalmarts and Costco type places, where it’s like 3 acres with one giant room and no support pillars in the middle.

I do not know how that jives with supporting the weight of a secure, hardened roof with like weapons platforms and shit. my guess is it’s gonna be a deluxe cock up.

Ostentatious garbage. Gaudy, tacky, generally hideous. Didn’t the French start building shit like this shortly before the Revolution?

Also, as an MEP professional: where’s the HVAC at? Going to get real stuffy in there real fast. I see zero diffusers. Also given the fucking marble ceiling, there will be no “acceptable” place to put any air outlets. So no AC, no outside air. Just a bunch of old-ass republicans farting into a closed box. Lighting also looks way under code.

Who’s the fucking architect so I can make sure I never waste my time with them?

Like AC just magically happens because you have a condenser on the roof.

Sounds like my landlord speaking to the tradies trying to make sure their tenants don’t die from carbon monoxide poisoning.

That’s extra funny post covid. High quality air filtration and ventilation? Who needs it!

I just realized it’s been ~2 months since I’ve seen any news about bird flu. The quiet before the storm? In fact - I can hear RFK Jr’s voice in my head saying “A bird flu pandemic would be good because it would cull the weak.” And - of course - Trump is nodding in a agreement.

High quality MERV filtration? Fake news. UV inside your air handler? Phony and probably gay.
