Jillian Segal’s push for the federal government to adopt a contested definition of antisemitism will face pushback from some concerned Labor MPs and party members, as Anthony Albanese mulls a response to his envoy’s 49 recommendations to stamp out anti-Jewish hate.
Amnesty International Australia has strongly rebuked the recommendations of Segal, the government’s antisemitism envoy, claiming they could have a “chilling effect stifling rights to protest and freedom of speech”.
In a statement, the charity criticised the recommendations as “vague and repressive” and said they risked “deepening community divisions”.
“The plan risks weaponising criticism of Israel and its commission of war crimes and genocide,” it said
Segal has downplayed some of her more wide-ranging recommendations, saying stripping universities of funding would be a “last resort”, and declining to provide specific examples of media coverage that she would see her office as having a role to “monitor”.
Cool and normal.
yet another reason not to visit prison dump island… my partner and her family really wanted to go there and i’ve been fighting against it because I really have no desire to go there… now they’ll let it go
FYI, Jillian Segal’s husband runs a trust fund that donates to a far-right lobby group that regularly promotes anti-immigration, anti-indigenous, and Islamophobic propaganda, as well as donations to state branches of the liberal party (the major conservative opposition in Australia).
Our world has changed, the barbarians have breached the gates

Way to make ‘antisemitism’ a completely meaningless term, dipshits
ruining the definition of antisemitism is exactly the point
These people make it so easy for the far right to spin up antisemitic (actually antisemitic, not this bullshit) conspiracy theories.
Like how the fuck do you even argue with the “Jews control the government” people when this happens? Obviously it’s not true but this is exactly what it would look like if it was, so what are we even supposed to say?
Aftab Malik, the special envoy to combat Islamophobia, said his report and recommendations to the government would be delivered in August. It is unclear if the government will respond to the antisemitism and Islamophobia reports separately, or with a combined, holistic package of reforms.
I wish we had Francesca Albanese rather than this dropkick Tony
Has the definition of “criticism” changed?
