Ophthalmologist Dr. Chloe Spertus visited the Elmwood Park Zoo today to examine Houdini, a 13 year old screech owl with corneal degeneration, as well as one of their bearded dragons, Smalls, who has a history of ocular discharge. We are very thankful for our relationship with such a wonderful facility.
Wow, that’s really obvious eye degeneration. At least it’s in safe hands.
There’s comparatively a lot of eye to degenerate!
Owl eyes make up as much as 5 percent of these birds’ total body weight. That may not sound like a lot, but for comparison, your eyeballs are about 0.0003 percent of your total weight. - ABC
That’s really a fascinating factoid. Reminds me of when smaller birds prepare to lay eggs and some of them are just totally swollen.
Stuff like the Kiwi are just insane! 🤯
I love it when humans try! Go good people!
We should all foster our compassion for all creatures!
