With Kamala Harris’s campaign struggling to extinguish the possibility of another Trump presidency, she seems willing to try everything — except for a clear political vision that folds together broad antiwar sentiment and economic populism.

Imagine trying to get 330 million people to agree on something.

Of course it’s gonna be awful and most people won’t like it.

Harris seems to be adopting a gimmicky new strategy every day, from embracing cryptocurrency to announcing that as president she’ll run all policy through a bipartisan council of advisors. She’s throwing everything against the wall, hoping that something, anything, will put her over the edge.

There’s one tactic Harris doesn’t seem keen to try, though. She won’t embrace the kind of antiwar sentiment and economic populism that might appeal to many currently unenthusiastic voters, but which would infuriate the Democratic establishment and the donor class.

I’m not here to downvote you, but my vote will be anti-fascist no matter what, yes Israel is fucking horrible, but I understand that as a politician that same distinction is much more complicated. What we need is for politics to be boring again, this sensational TV and ratings crap needs to find itself in the rubbish bin.

There is no anti-fascist candidate running. The choices are “appease fascists” and “be fascists”.

Given a choice between Neville Chamberlain and Vidkun Quisling, the choice is obvious. But we shouldn’t be in a position where Neville Chamberlain is the better choice.

Harris - repeatedly calls for an Israeli cease fire:

    March - https://www.npr.org/2024/03/04/1234822836/kamala-harris-benny-gantz-gaza-cease-fire-israel-hamas

    July - https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/25/harris-netanyahu-israel-cease-fire-00171315

    Response: “She’s not anti-war enough!”

    Lemmy: “She’s pro genocide!”

I don’t agree with these folks, but I can kinda see where they are coming from. It’s kinda tough to believe in the calls for a ceasefire while weapons are being delivered. They may imagine, by analogy, that this is like calling for a bank robber to stop robbing the bank while continuing to hand him extra guns and bullets. (Now, this analogy is actually not quite accurate, as Israel faces many threats, not just from Hamas/Gaza, and needs to be able to defend itself from actual foreign enemies, so there’s actually a lot of nuance here.)

The more cynical and jaded may even see the ceasefire attempts as meaningless words for the purpose of political posturing, while the actions (like sending weapons) show the true intent. Again, I don’t agree with these folks, but being able to understand and respond to the reasons why they are so doubtful of and disbelieving of Harris (and even of Biden) might be the key to winning over more Harris votes come November.
