Is Barret wrong for leaving Marlene behind in Midgar, while he goes off to fight for the Planet?

Should he stay home to take care of his family, the remaining slums community, and help foster the next generation of revolutionaries? Or are his skills as a warrior and idealist necessary to defeat the machinations of Shinra and Jenova?

I feel like he should be with his family. Marlene wouldn't have anyone if something were to happen to him.
