For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Love & Pop, the live-action directorial debut of renowned auteur Hideaki Anno, whose Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995), Ritual (2000), Cutie Honey (2004), and Shin Godzilla (2016) we have previously watched. It follows a teenage girl’s single-day quest to buy an expensive ring before a shop closes for the day. She tries various schemes, but eventually settles on the only one likely to succeed: a dive into the world of enjo kosai (compensated dating), in which older men pay her for companionship. One of the highest-rated Japanese films on Letterboxd.

Between the features, we will watch all three Soviet Winnie the Pooh (1969-72) cartoons. They are generally considered some of the best Eastern Bloc animations, and the best-known works of director Fyodor Khitruk, who also did the acclaimed short Film, Film, Film (1968), which we have not yet watched.

After that is The Incident (1967), a thriller starring Tony Musante and Martin Sheen as a pair of hoodlums who terrorize the riders of the New York City subway, taking a car hostage and unleashing their sadistic whims upon its habitants. Will the passengers rise up against these two ruffians? I guess we’ll find out. This is the best-known and best-regarded work of director Larry Peerce, and is considered an early classic of the New Hollywood school of filmmaking.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
